Whether it's a favorite movie of yours, or if you think it has commercial appeal (stars, formulaic story, etc)...

most recently Blade Runner 2049. A very smart sequel that expanded on the world of Blade Runner that didn't mesh with most movie goers. Yes, it was challenging at times but thats what made it so good. I guess audiences prefer "dumb fun" stuff like Fast & Furious or Thor . smh oh well.
and to a lesser extent, TRON: Legacy (wasn't technically a flop for Disney but they were expecting it to make much more money than it did). I freaking love this film. Great cast, booming soundtrack by Daft Punk , great visuals etc.

BR2049 doesn't surprise me, not when I can't count on 2 hands the number of moviegoing ppl I know who've even seen the original.
It's a Wonderful Life still seems strange that it took until tv airplay to get hot.

I'll catch flack for this, but fuck it. Ghostbusters 2016. Before I begin, I'm well aware humor is subjective and I know some people find the film funny and others don't. But anyways, you had a proven brand name, a director who has helmed good comedies, 4 comedic women as the top of their game, etc. This is a movie that got an unfair reception from the get-go and deserved a better treatment. I think if you take off the nostalgic goggles you have for the original movie you can see that the film is a perfectly serviceable, good-natured, summer blockbuster comedy.

Paul Feig destroyed any chance of success for that movie with insane twitter rants and writing looney articles like "Why Men Aren't Funny."

Do you think it was the all-female cast that did it? You mean that caused the film to flop? Well the cast faced harsh sexism from the get-go. I do think sexism played a role in it underperforming. Some people just couldn't handle seeing proven, talented females putting on the uniforms.
But honestly, I think too many people are so enamored and nostalgic for the original film that any new film coming their way that doesn't live up to it in the slightest is considered crap in their eyes. I think that was the bigger culprit here. I enjoy the 1984 film like anyone else and also grew up with it like many, however, I don't consider the film one of the greatest comedies of all-time nor on the quality level of something like Citizen Kane. Ghostbusters 1984 has been, and still is, an enjoyable comedy, but let's not act like it's a film that is studied at USC film school.

Granted, he probably could have handled things like that better. I certainly understand him wanting to defend his cast and film though. But he was someone that let his passions get the better of him to an extent. I don't think Paul Feig was a bad choice to direct at all and there's nothing in the film that I find shows he was the wrong choice. When I first heard he was chosen to direct, I thought he was a good choice given his track record and how he's worked with female casts before (Bridesmaids).

Hard to judge without really looking into the marketing and release dates at that time. That's a bigger factor imo than if the movie is actually good.
Like, the 13th Warrior is one of my favorite movies but I didn't see it until it was already on hbo back in 99-2000...so I don't recall the marketing for it and if it was poorly done or not. So while I think it's should be critically higher...I'm sure there's a reason it bombed.

I understand that it's probably because of the marketing strategy and because it isn't that mainstream, but even taking that into account I still can't believe Blade Runner 2049 flopped.

It made sense that Ghostbusters 2016 failed. The cast and director basically insulted fans of the original. They basically said well fuck you if you don't like the movie.

Those two Peter Berg movies Deepwater Horizon and Patriot's Day. I feel like Patriot's Day should have done better financially. The brothers were disgusting people and it made me so happy when the brother got thrown on the ground by the soldier.

I work very hard to not concern myself with finances. I like a lot of box office disappointments and as long as they exost, I'm not concerned about their financial success.
List of movies I liked/loved that were duds (I don;t really count dramas since there's not a lot of them that expected to be blockbusters):
John Carter
Speed Racer
Tomorrowland
Jupiter Ascending
Hugo

Yea they were both in the vein of like World Trade Center and United 93, with Deepwater Horizon being more of a straight disaster movie and one of the better ones in years. Audiences are weird.

Oliver Beene Wonder years style TV show with Miles Silverberg as the dentist father and Sister Mary Robert as the mother, and Tobias Funke as the adult voice of Oliver Beene.

Those two Peter Berg movies Deepwater Horizon and Patriot's Day. Haven't seen Deepwater Horizon, but I completely agree on Patriots Day. I thought it was a very well-made, entertaining film, and everyone I ever talked to loved it... also (if I remember correctly) there was a good amount of advertising for it. It's a shame it went so unnoticed.

I feel that Tomorrowland should've been a hit what with George Clooney starring in it.
