As the title says, I largely enjoyed this movie, nowhere near as bad as a lot of people are saying. (I just saw Mark Kermode rip into it on Youtube.) A lot of reviewers' criticisms about Steppenwolf I can agree with, but that and a lot of the other complaints are to me, symptomatic of the CBM genre in general (eg cgi slugfests, etc). Just like Wonder Woman, I thought this movie was best with the character dynamics, but as usual, it finally descends into another boss battle/beat em up. (Typical of most superhero movies, IMO.) It could be argued that Steppenwolf being a fairly boring villain is somewhat besides the point as he was mainly just a threat/plot device to "assemble" the team and as many reviewers have said, the hero interactions with each other were the high points. I actually thought there potential hints of more character to Steppenwolf when he fought the Amazons, but he needed more such scenes to flesh out him more.
Good to see more civillian rescuing going on, and that provided a couple of good character and humour moments (no prizes for guessing who I'm mainly talking about).
But back on topic, towards the last half hour, I was hoping there was going to be some additional obstacle or twist when they go to stop Steppenwolf in Russia, but it was pretty much they state what they have to do, then they go off do it and have the final battle/confrontation, entertaining as it was. (It was good to see them all teaming up to fight Steppenwolf, reminded me of the final battle with Darkseid in JL:War.) What I would have liked would have been an additional surprise threat, say another villain (or the twist they pulled near the end of WW with who Ares was), or some additional complication. Likewise, going back earlier in the movie, after all the speculation about how Superman would come back, it waa done in a surprisingly straightforward fashion. Although it did allow for some interesting moral conflict between Bruce and Diana, and there's the tease/question of how they're just bringing back the Clark Kent identity which they can explore in the next Superman movie. (Which they obviously have, judging from Clark in glasses and the shirt rip scene, which surprised me somewhat as Cavill said in a recent interviews other ways they could bring back Superman's secret identity.) Thoughts?
