As pretty much everyone is really saying it, it's not really bad, it's just not great.
Just to throw out a few positive aspects of it are definitely the characters. I think the humor and interactions works between them. They were lacking depths, especially the newcomers like Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg, but that probably have to do with the 2hr runtime, fair enough. But I enjoyed their banter, and honestly wished there was more disagreement between them. That's something the first Avenger film did well, was showing the disagreement between each member, leading to conflict and it adds another layer of depths. I think they finally got Superman right. BvS is really hopeless and can't really be improved much because of its story. But I feel like Man of Steel could have been improved big time if they had this kind of performance from Henry versus what really got in MoS. The performances are solid as well. Story-wise, the film was less ambitious than BvS, which was for the best and it worked. Alien invasion, trying to convert Earth into said invader's own planet. Generic, unoriginal, but at least its simple and cohesive and easy to follow. And the film is fun as well. Would have I liked to see something different? Yes, but it was fine. Steppenwolf was just another throwaway, disposable really, villain, no better or worst than the MCU's worst villains. His CGI didn't help with that either. However, his motivations were fine and easy to follow. Characterization-wise, nothing really special though.
It's biggest crime is its $300 million budget, which unfortunately is going to take a toll on the Box Office as well, which it looks like it's already doing since it only made $96 million this weekend. Box Office expectations were already projected to be low, like $110 million, but it could even meet it's lowest expectations, which really does suck for them.
But I don't know where that budget went into the most, but the CGI wasn't it. I know big budget superhero films are expected to have CGI. Fair enough. But JL really went overboard with it, it wasn't great either. Not sure if they had any actual shooting locations and that's where most the money went or if most of it was set, but I expected better for CGI if you're going to have a budget like that. They should have done prosthetic and makeup with CGI touch up for Steppenwolf and Cyborg. Steppenwolf looked like he was a video game character with video game graphics and Cyborg was still meh. I think they have improved it since the first trailer was released, but I kept saying since the first trailer, they should have gone Terminator route with Cyborg and have a lot of prosthetic and make-up. I would have liked an actor too for Steppenwolf because in the cartoon, he his kinda human pretty much, so I think they could have gotten away with it. But the ending was the worst offender with the CGI. I was hoping they avoid the generic "CGI doomsday/death stuff" in the sky, but they can't seem to get away from that.
Tonal-wise, it is all over the place. And that's clearly because of two directors and it's pretty blatant. I don't mind the humor in this, but the film is disjointed so it just feels forced and shoehorned in and there's no natural flow to it. And that's mostly because of we came off from BvS which is just an utterly depressing and humorless film. Which leads to what's another problem. Justice League feels like a response rather than a sequel. It's like the producers listed every problem fans had with BvS and did the exact opposite in this film and those became the priority over the story. I don't mind the story as it was easy to follow, but it was also pretty thin. Overall, it just feels really disposable as well. I don't really feel compelled to see it again anytime soon. I think they're starting to move in the right direction, but it also feels pretty generic
Overall, I'll give it a 5.5/10
