And name a few of them, hopefully there's more than one film.
If your favorite year is 1939, try to pick one more, there's too many obvious one's from that year!

I don't limit my Best of the Year lists to 10 or any other arbitrary number. If I think a film is good enough, I put it on the list. Here are some years with the most movie titles as "Best"
1942 - 20 1945 - 18 1960 - 18

The following are what i consider my cream-of-the-crop years for movies OVERALL... 1.2008 (it's this years depth that puts it ahead of 2005 overall as if i looked only at my Top 6 movies between 2008 and 2005, 2005 would be the winner. but beyond the Top 6, 2005 only has one 7/10 level movie where as 2008 has four which was enough to tip the scales in favor of 2008 overall.) 2.2005 3.2006 (edges out 2010, but barely. it's damn close!) 4.2010 5.2002 (edges out 1995, but barely) 6.1995 ill probably give 2006 the very small edge over 2010 at the moment but that one is difficult to determine a clear winner when weighing things all around as strictly in terms of average score 2006 barely edge out 2010 but there is other factors that math can't take into effect for me. ------------------------------------------------- The 2000's decade definitely has the all around best movies for me as it's got the largest volume of movies i score a 8 or higher... 2010's = 17 movies 2000's = 40 movies 1990's = 30 movies 1980's = 10 movies 1970's = 4 movies 1960's = 6 movies so as you can see when it comes to more of my higher tier movies the 2000's really shines as just that block of 40 movies makes up 20.4% of My Favorite Movies or it's a even bigger percentage if i look only at all movies i score a 8 or higher of which it would make up 37.4%. p.s. i rank the decades like this overall... 1)2000's 2)1990's 3)2010's 4)1980's 5)1960's 6)1970's. after those six decades things tend to drop off a cliff overall. but another comment in relation to what's said here... the 2010's got boosted because of the volume of 7/10's it's got which made it all around better than all decades except 2000's/1990's overall which beat it because of their higher volume of 8's. mikef6 Agreed. I just based mine basically on volume of movies i score a 7 or higher in a given year and then looked at the overall years with score ranges etc and determined the overall best years on that. p.s. everything i score a 7 or higher in general is amongst My Favorite Movies which is currently 196 movies.

Looking at my top 60 list, of those movies, the ones that have the most for each year are:
1957 Bridge on the River Kwai, Abominable Snowman, Night of the Demon
1962 El Cid, Barabbas, Phantom of the Opera, Burn Witch Burn,
1965 Godzilla vs Monster Zero, The Agony and the Ecstasy, Die Monster Die, Dr. Terror's House of Horrors, For a Few Dollars More
1968 Planet of the Apes, the Lost Continent, Once Upon A Time in the West, Targets
1972 Blacula, Horror Express, Frogs, (The Night Stalker tv movie),
1973 Legend of Hell House, (the Night Strangler tv movie), The Day of the Jackal, Enter the Dragon,
1987 Robocop, Predator, Masters of the Universe
I think if I had a top 100 list then 1961-1975 would be the most active years for favorites.

Primemovermithrax Pejorative But in terms of a single year do you have a favorite OVERALL? because if i looked at things the way you do things would be different for me to but i prefer the way i did mine in my initial post which is more accurate for me overall as those six years i listed i can definitely say are my Top 6 years for movies because of general volume of movies in the given years amongst My Favorite Movies in general and some have a bit more higher tier movies than others etc. but looking at my Top 60 movies or so (actually Top 58 as there is only 58 movies i gave a SOLID 8/10 or higher), to be similar to what you did, here would be my top years based on volume of them and ranked based on only those movies... 1.2005 (5 movies) 2.2008 (4 movies) 3.1999 (4 movies) 4.2006 (4 movies) so with that said... 1999 looks better than it actually is overall as there are only four movies in 1999 i scored a 7 or higher and all four happen to be a SOLID 8/10 or higher. so the movies that did make it into my favorites this year are of higher quality but after those movies there is nothing else i would consider amongst My Favorite Movies in general. doing it the way you did ended up cutting out half (i.e. removed 1995/2002/2010) of my very best years overall. so as you can see things are different for me if i base things strictly by your way of measuring even though i feel the way i selected my list (in my initial post in here) is more accurate in terms of overall years. with that said... i realize maybe you did not want to spend too much time measuring things and that's fine. but i just thought i would mention it as i feel the way i measured mine is more accurate in that i only counted movies that are amongst My Favorite Movies in general (i.e. movies i score a 7 or higher of which there is only 196 total movies out of the 2,150+) as apart of the equation (only way some movies outside of My Favorite Movies would be considered is if it's too close to call in a couple of given years) and then looked into the details a bit more based on volume of each score etc. for example... say 2005 had one 9/10 and 2006 had one 9/10, that would basically cancel each other out and then i would move down the list and see if there is any advantages for 2005 over 2006 and vice versa. because say 2005 pulled ahead of 2006 in 7.5-8/10 range movies for example by a little bit and it pushed it ahead overall at this point then i would start looking at my 7/10 range movies in which case it's possible 2006 could have regained the lead overall. hell, even if things ended up exactly tied in terms of movie scores/volume of movies in a couple of given years to compare i could then start getting into other details like movies i scored a 6-6.5/10 or look at variety of movies in the two years or start looking at say the two movies i scored a 9/10 in each year and see if i would slightly prefer one set over another etc. this basically gives you a pretty good overall feel on what years you like best overall. this is basically how i made my list in my initial post.

I would be reluctant to commit to saying one year because while I may have 4 entries from a particular year they may not be as high scoring if I thought about it as some other years, and then I have to factor in the number of movies I may watch from that year, whether they make my top 100 or not. Also, some films I consider my favorites may not be ones that I can watch any time, while other films I can watch regularly. If I say 1965 it doesn't feel right. I guess if you twisted my arm I would say 1972 because of Horror Express being from that year and that rates highly on my favorites list.

Primemovermithrax PejorativeMaybe i am misunderstanding that bold text but are you saying you are factoring in movies you have not seen? ; because i noticed the "I have to factor in the number of movies I MAY watch from that year". because if that's true, it makes no sense to me to do that as, naturally, you can only judge a year based on what you have seen and then make your list accordingly. but outside of that it seems we are probably similar enough with the rest of it. i just might have a bit more refined system is all but i don't think yours is that far off from what i can tell This is where we seem to differ as i won't rate a movie all that high if it's not something ill want to re-watch within a reasonable time frame (reasonable time frame = see 'general rule' below). as a general rule for me... anything i score a 7 or higher will see AT LEAST one re-watch every few years or so. because there is no way i am going to score a movie fairly high (i.e. 7's or higher) if i rarely re-watch it as when i simplify things movies are ultimately one of two categories for me which are... -6/10 or higher = Thumbs Up (will re-watch) (NOTE: although only my 7's and higher i consider 'Favorites') -5/10 or lower = Thumbs Down (won't re-watch(with rare exception)) so while i still do re-watch my 6/10 range movies here and there they (especially the easy majority of them) tend to see fewer re-watches than movies i score a 7 or higher. p.s. with that said... i am sure there is some movies i scored a 6/10 that are sorta on the back burner in terms of a re-watch but what i do to help keep this stuff to a minimum is say once every 3-5 years or so ill look over all movies i scored in the 6/10 range and if i have no desire to re-watch them within a reasonable time frame ill simply lower the score back to a 5/10 on the movie(s) in question. this helps keep the quality of my 6/10 ratings a bit higher.

Ha no. There are films I consider my absolute favorites then there are regular films I watch from a particular year. There are always "new" films available from those years too (meaning they are available to watch), but I mean just based on the films I have seen to date, I cant really scrutinize what would be my favorite easily.

Primemovermithrax PejorativeOkay I see. Yeah, it's cool. it's just over the years i eventually sorted through what movies stand-out-from-the-pack vs just-another-movie. years ago i think i scored movies a bit too high but once i sat down and put in some thought into things it was just easier for me to figure out those basic things as i sorted out the bulk of it by doing that and then slowly tweaked things. still, it takes time but i think you will eventually get the hang of it even with that said... there is still tweaks here and there as new movies join the list and some drop off on re-watches. but i would consider it's been pretty well tuned overall for a while now.
