I've always loved Romero's zombie universe (Dawn being my favourite) and the Mad Max films and 12 Monkeys.
Even crap like Doomsday and Waterworld. Book of Eli was okay too.
Any good one you can recommend?

Clive Owen ruins that movie for me. Why? His performance is like watching paint dry. I just don't think he is very good in the movie and it takes me out of the story.

Some of the best have already been mentioned but I will add that I’ve always had a soft spot for The Postman

The pair of THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED and IN THE YEAR 2889 stick out on top for me.
After that, comes the superior pair of the Romero zombie films, his two classics NIGHT OF THE LVIVING DEAD 1968 and DAY OF THE DEAD 1985. He truly flunked in Dawn of the Dead, which was undeniably his most Hollywood contrived formula movie, a real groaner that fails miserably. A viewer can't help but notice how each circumstance is contrived by a Hollywood script writer.
But DAY OF THE DEAD, which is probably even better than NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, doesn't have as much great dark humor as "Night" does, but surpasses it in inspiration and motivation.
DAY OF THE DEAD has a character similar to Sgt. Barnes of PLATOON. However, Rhodes, has a little bit better motivation. Barnes is just out to kill, while trying to look like he cares for his men. Rhodes actually tries to care for his men, but is a coward in the end. Barnes betrays his men out of demonic evil. Rhodes does so out of fear. Rhodes shares his name with one famous historic character, the lead officer of a lifeboat in which he allowed his men to run amok and throw off the helpless. I'm not sure there's a correlation here, as the historic Rhodes was passive and afraid from the start, just watching out for his neck. The Rhodes of this movie was very active in pursuit of killing others.
THE POSTMAN is underrated. It lacks the continual action and activity of most such movies, because it sacrificed the appeal of non stop action for the obvious ennui of a real apocalyptic world. We get real characters dealing with one psychopath.
WORLD GONE WILD is one that I think is going to be a cult film one day. It has that look, with the dark comedy and the complete chaos going for it. It's not that interesting, but neither is an apocalyptic world.
So, one has to decide whether to go for the "Wham bam thank you ma'am" Hollywood style apocalyptic movie, or the more credible "characters in search of an exit" style. I choose the latter, obviously. I'm more into motivation and characters than most people here. Perhaps not as much as Matt Garth, with his very low key picks, but still more than most.
No offense.
