My 7 year old son recently discovered the Indiana Jones series. He especially likes Temple of Doom. When it came to asking if I wanted to watch the fourth film with him, I hesitated for a moment but ended up watching the whole movie. It's probably the first time watching it since buying the Blu-ray set in 2012. It's not a particularly terrible film but one just deeply mediocre. There just seems a lack of energy and enthusiasm in front of and behind the camera. I like the scenes when its just Indy and Shia digging around in Peru. For a glimpse, you get a sense of discovery shown in the prior films. I wasn't bothered by it being Aliens but the CGI had me yearning for melting puppet heads. Even the wife pointed out how fake as shit the background looked outside the Area 51 warehouse.
6/10 if being generous.

6/10 if being generous. You let your 7 year old watch Doom even with the heart-pulling and dark content? I mean isn't he a little young for that? I'm not criticizing or anything. Just a little surprised you're letting him see such a film at a young age given the content in it.

7/10; being an obsessive fan, I'm thoroughly biased. However, I wholeheartedly agree there is a lack of intrigue compared with the original films. It finally struck me that they told the wrong story regarding aliens. It should have been something like Spielberg's own UFO classic Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind. Like imagine Jones and Mutt racing the Soviets to find the first alien landing site which happens to be El Dorado, visiting places around the world uncovering clues. The set up takes too long for the adventure to begin.

6/10 for me as well. It's not a good movie but it's certainly watchable and entertaining enough.

Hated it. The excessive CGI, Shia Lebeouf, the silly alien plot and Indy behaving like a jaded 85-year old were too much for me. The only entry in this otherwise fine series I'd not revisit.

It's OK. Gets far too much hate imo. It's the worst of the series, but not horrible by any means. 6.5/10.

I think critic James Berardinelli hits the nail on the head here for the film:
"But a key element is missing: excitement. There's no suspense and not a lot of energy. We never believe that Indy or a member of his entourage is in danger. There's never any sense of "How's he going to get out of this?" The cliffhangers are easily shrugged off." Also, he's right in that the there is a lack of tension for the action with obvious choreography.

It's better than the 1st/2nd movies of the series.
6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up)

I liked it but I can understand the Negativity towards it. Especially when it comes to the CGI which I know that both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas absolutely love using. I think that 1 of the Main Problems with the Movie was the fact that even though Steven Spielberg did indeed use a lot of practical effects for the movie. The CGI made a lot of the Practical Effects also look like CGI as well. For example, at the beginning when that Hanger with the Number 51 on it opens and Indy, Spalko, Mac, Dovchenko, and all of those Russian Soldiers enter it, Well that Number 51 Hanger was actually real but the Special Effects in that shot of it opening made it look CGI. If they do make a 5th Indiana Jones (I doubt that they will) then they definitely have to avoid making that same mistake again. All of that being said though.......I Freaking Loved Cate Blanchett as the Main Villain in the Movie!

"Lack of energy"? That means less "wasted energy on crap" the way Temple of Doom did.
Still, not as good as the first one, but way better than the second, about even with the third.

I think Raiders of the Lost Ark is the best, followed by the Last Crusade... I enjoyed Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, more than Temple Of Doom. Temple Of Doom was too dark for me.
However, When I watch Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it feels choppy... Pieced together, might be another good descriptive term... At least in my opinion.
All the films seem to have a formula... Such as, at the beginning of the film, the Paramount Logo, transitions into a real "mountain" on the set of where the movie is being filmed.
With the original three films, it seemed that all of these formulated concepts flowed nicely with the main story of the film... However, with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it felt like they made as story around these formulated concepts...
Instead of filming a movie, and then noticing that a mountain in the area happened to look like the paramount logo... It seems like they did it backwards. "Let's find a mountain that looks like the Paramount Logo, and then let's create a scene in the movie to reference that mountain..."
That Prairie Dog mound, was just stupid.
The whole film seemed to be done this way... "Hey we did this before, so we have to do it again!... and then we'll make a movie out of all of these pieces!"
The movie felt like it was made too quickly, and that was a let down for me.
6.5/10.

I hated it.
It felt very much like Spielberg owed Lucas a favor and had to do a film he wasn't feeling or his car was going to be repossessed.

Supposedly, If they do make a 5th "INDIANA JONES" Movie then George Lucas will out and if that is indeed true then I am very very surprised that both Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford agreed to that.

I've grown to not hate it as much as I used to. It's passable, and has mildly entertaining moments, but a lot of things about it irritate me. Everything it tries doing has been done much better in the previous films.
