Is Better Call Saul a satisfying prequel to Breaking Bad, or not what you hoped it would be?

Better Call Saul is more than satisfactory in my eyes, and in some ways, even better than Breaking Bad.
I enjoy the slower pace, and the character development is exquisite. And I much prefer the supporting characters in BCS to BB.

And I much prefer the supporting characters in BCS to BB. I agree with every word, except for the last sentence. I'd rate the supporting characters about equal, or maybe give the edge to Breaking Bad, with supporting characters like Tuco (who was also in BCS, briefly, of course), Fring, Badger, Jane, and others. Of course, BB had more time to add those characters, Better Call Saul is still early in its run. (I hope.) It's also good to hear from someone who also likes the more relaxed pace of BCS. It was a tense issue on the IMDb boards.

Better Call Saul is a perfect prequel to the perfect Breaking Bad. Satisfied in every way.

I like Better Call Saul, but it doesn't captivate me the same way Breaking Bad did. I think it's because we already know how Jimmy's story turns out. Breaking Bad was more exciting to watch as it was airing because the audience had no idea what was going to happen, and it was fun to theorize about how Walt was going to get himself out of the messes he created.

I agree with you about that to some extent, anna. We do know something about where some of the main characters are headed, but I think there's an intentional difference between the tone and pace of BB and BCS. Rather than rewrite it, I'll just post what I said on another thread: The simple fact is, a show in which the main story line traces the transition of cynical, directionless huckster into a flamboyant, bottom-feeding lawyer is simply not going to offer a natural setting for the bombastic moments that are more fitting in a plot line about the manufacture and sale of an illegal drug.
I give Vince Gilligan & Co. credit for not just making Breaking Bad, Jr., perhaps focusing on the cartel, the DEA, or some other aspect of the original show which would have given a plausible setting for spectacular moments like the explosion of Tuco's HQ, the head-on-the-tortoise booby trap, Fring's hospital visit, etc.
Gilligan chose to change direction, to focus more on plot and character development, and to trust his viewers to decide whether to follow along.
Another thing some BrBa fans seem to forget is that there were quite a few, shall we say, moments of minimal excitement, as when we watched Walt meticulously, repeatedly crafting PB&J sandwiches for Flynn (as well as a captive meth dealer), installing a hot water heater, not to mention Hank's rehab, Marie's weirdo house hunting, etc. It wasn't all slam-bang action in BrBa, either.

Is Better Call Saul a satisfying prequel to Breaking Bad, or not what you hoped it would be? It is almost as good.

It's also good to hear from someone who also likes the more relaxed pace of BCS. It was a tense issue on the IMDb boards. Yeah, tell me about it! They complained that it was too slow, and that nothing exciting was happening. They must have low attention spans. It's about the story of how Saul came to be, even though we know the outcome. While it is no Breaking Bad (2008), I think they're doing one hell of a job. I wouldn't mind if every single character had a spinoff. That's how great the writing is.

Is Better Call Saul a satisfying prequel to Breaking Bad, or not what you hoped it would be? No. BCS is way inferior to Breaking Bad. The only good ep last season was the one with the montage of Jimmy trying to get fired. Everything else is a watered down Breaking Bad. You should watch it but it just doesn't compare to the original series.

It's better than I ever dared hope it would be and I've loved every second of it. It has the same excellent cinematography and writing that made Breaking Bad so good. I could never understand the complaints about it being too slow as the episodes just seem to fly by to me. I'm very much looking forward to Season 3 in April. In the UK we get it a few hours after the US on Netflix.

I could never understand the complaints about it being too slow as the episodes just seem to fly by to me. I'm very much looking forward to Season 3 in April. In the UK we get it a few hours after the US on Netflix. I think it all comes down to a divide between Breaking Bad viewers who liked the action aspects of that show, and those who are into character development. The element of "who is this guy or woman, and how did they become who they are?" was sketchier in BB, like how we were told just enough about Walt's background, such as his disappointment in the tech enterprise, to justify his choices as the series unfolded. Better Call Saul would be absurd it the writers shoehorned the sort of spectacular action sequences into the show which occurred more naturally in the BB milieu. (Though there was some shoehorning in BB, such as when Walt destroyed Flynn's car rather than return it.) Comments on the boards have made it clear that there are some who consider much of the character study to be filler, only there to punctuate the action aspect. Those who are interested in the characters' motivations and development aren't bored by BCS, which delves more deeply into that element. I very much agree about the cinematography of both shows being very good. It was a redeeming feature of BB when plot lines veered into the absurd from time to time.

It satisfies me. I still think BB is better, but I can't truly judge until BCS is completely finished. Love the humorous scenes such as Tony the Toilet Buddy and Squat Cobbler. But most of all, my favorite character is Mike. The episode which explains why he quit the police department and moved to New Mexico was the best.

Nice development of the Jimmy/Chuck plotline, and great buildup on Mike's.

It's a little slower than I hoped it to be, but I love it.
I think Better Call Saul is a solid 9/10 so far. (I rated Breaking Bad 10/10.)

Loving season 3 so far.
I wish it was 13 episodes a season rather than 10.
