I love prison movies - most are very good. (in this order) -Birdman of Alcatraz -Grand Illusion -Le Trou -A Man Escaped -Pappillon -Cool Hand Luke -I Am A Fugitive From A Texas Chain Gang -Brubaker -The Shawshank Redemption -Escape From Alcatraz How do you rate "best" in the prison movie sub-genre? Any that were just good? Any good action movies that just happened to take place in prison? Or movies about the true events that play out in prison life?
I suppose one cant go wrong with Shawshank Redemption, of course, but there are so many others...

The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile have always been two of my favourites.
And, call me a philistine if you will, but I enjoyed the Adam Sandler remake of The Longest Yard. Lockout (2012) was fun too.

Cool Hand Luke was very good. American History X Starred Up Tom Hardy's performance in Bronson was a tour de force, even if the film overall was uneven
Un proph猫te is supposed to be really good, but I haven't seen it.
