Stallone's egoistic, slick and dumb 80's slasher\actioner\thriller, is quite a fun ride, in spite of it's over-the-top silliness, hilarious machismo and flawed presentation. This film could have had plenty more potential, and become more of a revered cult favorite, had it not been for fear of box-office failure and the producers reducing the running time to a mere 85mins. The film is tight and fast paced, but the editing is choppy and rushed, and much of it's violence was toned down or completely cut altogether. The dark theme of the film, is rendered pretty much impotent due to the slickness of the visuals and MTV style filming. It would have benefited from some stronger characterization and a darker tone.
The film is violent, but it is pretty much bloodless and non-graphic for the most part and this is due to the stringent MPAA standards at the time, ruining the film's raison d'etre. I would love to see a restored version of this, along with Stallone's NIGHTHAWKS-81', which while flawed in it's current form, is still one of his best films.

I thought it was stupid when I saw it in 86 ( at the drive in ) Haven't been tempted to watch it since. It's over the top and even surreal scenes of action violence of Stallone decimating the motorcycle gang, was almost reminiscent of Bronson's Death Wish 3-85' from the previous year, with an all out, anything goes for violent mayhem. For me, it didn't quite emulate the full on vigilante urban assault and carnage that Death Wish 3 is renowned for, but it does come pretty close, just not quite as cartoonish or gritty. This is where DW3's success lies, in it's unique blend of realism, with ultra-violent colorful playfulness and gaudiness that actually works. The stalker\slasher scenes in Cobra looked like they had the potential to push the envelope a bit too, but any suspense, scares and visceral thrills became a lost opportunity due to obvious cuts and rushed scenarios. I guess the MPAA didn't think people were ready for graphic and bloody stylized carnage like audiences today are.

"I am going to blow it up man!"
"Go ahead, I don't shop here."
Clever use of Dirty Harry alumni, especially Andrew Robinson as Stallone's supervisor.
What we learn from the movie is that tough guys drink Pepsi. Even tougher guys live behind a Pepsi sign.
Coca Cola is shown as a dirty old vending machine outside the rural motel.

Well put, Toasted Cheese. Cobra is truly a guilty pleasure; dumb, macho fun. Does have some terrific action sequences with some amazing stunt work.

Not one of the best action movies of the 80's but certainly enjoyable.
