I can't define a "Classic" movie, but I know it when I see it.
Sometimes Turner Classic Movies allows a special guest to choose the night's lineup. I once saw No Country For Old Men which is one I've never seen them play on that channel. I'm wondering if BTTF and The Hurt Locker were a guest's choice that night. Usually I wouldn't see those films on that channel. Otherwise they stick to their usual lineup. American Movie Classics has gotten to where they'll show almost anything. Like so many other channels they have evolved away from their original name. It won't be long before they air all original tv shows. Anyone remember when MTV actually played music videos or when Bravo featured critically acclaimed foreign films? Ratings drive the programming.

My personal opinion is a classic movie is an iconic movie. So if the movie stands the test of time or holds an huge impact on culture, it's classic regardless of age...Although time usually plays a role in determining the classic. For example, I personally think the LOTR trilogy is a classic. Waiting another 10 years or more to bestow that honor on it is silly when it is probably a foregone conclusion. But when do we judge whether the movie stands the test of time? You're right about the L.O.T.R. trilogy being considered a classic... but when exactly did it get that honor?

I don't think there is any exact age a movie has to be for classic status.
It probably just boils down to how popular a movie remains as the years pass as the ones that hang around (like are re-watched on TV or DVD (and the like) for something like 15-20+ years and are well known) are pretty much classics where as the ones that don't are not really classics as they are mostly forgotten.
but with that said... if you had me put a age on a movie to play along with the topic i would say something in the ball park of 15-20 years old or older to be considered a classic as that's when you start to get some real age on a movie and starts to become a bit clearer whether something is a classic, or at least potential classic, or not.
