Two epic sci-fi adventures set on another world. One flopped, one went stratospheric. But which do you like best?

Avatar, even though I'd give John Carter a 7/10, an underrated movie imo.

I'm glad I waited for Avatar to come to tv because it wasn't worth paying for. Just a terrible movie, top to bottom. 'Amazing' visuals can't cover up a completely hollow story.

John Carter has a more original story obviously, but Avatar is a far better made movie with vastly better cgi and production value and the 3D is fantastic. I also like Worthington's performance much better than Kitch's performance and Avatar has a much better villain.
Avatar re-cycles a story we have seen many times but it does it very well and it has an emotional power that John Carter never even comes close to achieving.

Avatar had more innovative FX but I think JC was more fun, though there are things I disliked about it. a)the cast b) that Martian gibberish like "Jeddak." Just say "Chief" for fuck sake.

John Carter, thought it was pretty cool movie, and very underrated. Avator was good, but they didn'stick with the cartoon soric material. Love the cartoon, hated the movie.
John Carter for the win.

I agree that The Last Airbemder is a terrible movie, but I think the OP is talking about the sci-fi movie Avatar (2009) and not the 2010 movie based on the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I like John Carter, but Avatar, despite the rehashed storyline, was the better movie.

I got love for John Carter but Avatar was just unreal / awesome in IMAX 3D. Gotta go with James Cameron here.

Avatar though I think John Carter had more franchise potential given the # of books there were.

Actually I mispelled it, meant Avatar. I switched the "o" with an "a", and wasn't thinking.

Funny enough, I stayed away from Avatar on its theatrical release but was one of 20 or so people that saw John Carter theatrically. I later saw Avatar on tv which I'm sure wasn't the full experience. It seemed like a rehashed revisionist western film from the late 1960s or 1970s.
John Carter for the win.

I liked John Carter. Didn't love it and true the expectations were very low but I found it a decent adventure film, around 7/10.
I did not like Avatar. Great effects and little else, and that's not nearly enough. I have no interest in seeing it again or any sequels. I'll just watch Dances with Wolves again.
