One thing I love about old movies is how people took care of their personal grooming. No matter what their economic situations may be, no man and especially no woman ever went out into the public without a hat.
One scene that sticks in my mind is the one in THE THIN MAN, where Nick was questioning this small-time hood and his wife left him. Although they were dirt poor, she still wore a hat upon departing.
My favorite style of ladies' headwear is the "Empress Eugenie" hat, jauntily cocked to one side. It was first worn by Greta Garbo in her second talkie, ROMANCE, and it caught on generally. I also love turban hats, such as the one worn my Joan Crawford in THE WOMEN.
The idea of wearing hats outdoors faded in the '60's and '70's. And while I'm the first to admit that clothes today are more comfortable than those of generations ago, I kinda miss those hats, LOL.

I had to look up what a Empress Eugenie hat was/is, and found this: Gypsy Rose Lee 1937. ...and the real Empress with a hat, that strangly doesn't look at all as the popular 1930s hats. I guess it have to do with what you write, comfortability. I do miss when men wore hats in movies as a natural part of their outdoor clothes, they were them so naturaly in contemporary movies.

I LOVE old films (MOST-especially black & white ones)...BUT I'm NOT a fan of wearing hats. Although it does look good in these films.

Tele, that's a beautiful Delacroix painting of Eugenie, but she didn't wear that cocked hat all the time! This portrait was probably done in the summer, where she would have worn a broad=brimmed hat to protect her skin from the sun's rays. The point is, she did wear a hat in daytime, which was de rigeur for ladies for centuries.
The point of my OP is that I really liked the fact that both men and women wore hats when they were in public during daylight hours.
BTW, the best exponent of the snap-brimmed men's hat in movies was Humphrey Bogart. No matter what role he played, he always wore that hat in public. Perhaps the best example was the closing scene in CASABLANCA, where he made his farewells to Ingrid Bergman, who wore a similar, albeit feminine, version of that same hat. By contrast, Paul Henreid's hat was a different style, which makes me wonder if Bogie and Bergman's headwear was meant to be symbolic of their attachment to one another. Something to think about.

The hat in the Delecroix painting looks like Vivian Leigh in That Hamilton Woman.
My favorite in Scarlett's green silk bonnet .
Also the lovely hats in MY FAIR LADY , especially the pink organdy.

Chalice_Of_EvilNice collection of pictures ! I like the narrative that went with them (especially Indy's). I am still pondering the op's declaration that "hats = personal grooming". I always thought they were a fashion thing.

Chalice_Of_Evil Nice collection of pictures ! I like the narrative that went with them (especially Indy's). Thanks, Bat Outtaheck. Glad you liked them/my post. I do usually like to try to have some sort of vague ‘structure’ to my posts when including a bunch of images/GIFs, rather than just have them all higgledy-piggledy. I do apologise to those who find GIFs distracting, though. I’d never used them before I started posting here on IMDB 2, but then was introduced to them and...well...have become somewhat 'reliant', I’m afraid. It’s just that they oftentimes capture moments from things perfectly, I find, when trying to describe those same moments just wouldn’t suffice/do them justice. I was also considering starting a thread here regarding a specific thing in films (much like there’s been other threads started here which revolved around a specific thing in films – be it cats, cityscapes, shopping or toilets) – but I don’t wish to encroach on what others (who have been posting here a lot longer than myself) have already got going on. For now, I'm just happy to contribute to other poster's already existing threads.

Chalice_Of_EvilPLEASE please post any and all ideas that strike ! The more threads the more chance to post and to interact with others ! "Encroaching" on the boards is , if anything, encouraged! Why, we have even gone off on tangents on occasion which have turned into whole threads of their own. If folks can be wheedled into posting more than just a list of titles there will be happy dancing in the streets ! I have also become VERY fond of posting clips and images. Saves on typing and typos!

Good one, Kosko. The Sherlock series generally featured people wearing some pretty striking and memorable hats, women and men alike. It's like making those movies literally inspired the costume departments, specifically the "hat people",--to the extent that they can be separated from the rest--to come up with new and improved ways for making the characters cover their head in striking and original ways.
