Two seminal SF films were released in 1977. Star Wars, a well-deserved classic, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which I think is an even better film though it is clear SW has been the more successful and certainly more influential to the genre overall. But Close Encounters is a rare SF film with great acting, pacing, direction and effects that work incredibly well. And, of course, another brilliant John Williams score. I really appreciate how the film takes its time and then, during the final half hour, we are given a glorious barrage of wondrous scenes. If I were to make a list of my Top 20 films I would certainly include Close Encounters of the Third Kind. 10/10

9/10 - I had the pleasure of seeing this in the movie theater when it first came out and was blown away.

You're welcome. Now I gotta go find my "Jaws (1975) vs. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)" poll thread...

B+ very good, alas its reputation seemed to suggest I was supposed to love it. Great soundtrack, memorable visuals. I've never owned it.

6/10 – a decent movie but marred by extraterrestrial spiritualism.
