Plot summary is often enough. If you compare the average plot summary written in 2016 to one written in 1970 via IMDB lists the difference in description is profound. A 1970 plot summary might go something like: "an author is stalked by a homicidal maniac." A 2016 plot summary might be: "a widowed father and son embark upon a journey of self-discovery." Even for genre films the modern plot summaries are often lame-o. Compare The Blood on Satan's Claw 1971 plot summary: Horror thriller set in 17th century England about the children of a village slowly converting into a coven of devil worshipers. the Witch 2015: A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession. The.Party.2017 Janet hosts a party to celebrate her new promotion| but once the guests arrive it becomes clear that not everything is going to go down as smoothly as the red wine.

Delayed release/development issues are probably the most consistent red flags I can think of.
Another I haven't seen mentioned is one big actor and a bunch of unknowns. If it is a thriller (or the story involves people dying in some way), the tension can sometimes be absent.
This one is mainly specific to comedies, but too many pop culture references in the trailer. Years ago it would have been something like a record scratch and a character saying something like "you are the weakest link, goodbye."

Mark Wahlberg for me. Cat 5 hurricane warning there. Will Ferrell for me...no-talent ass clown who ruins everything he's in.

If the release date is after 1993. Why '93? I don't disagree though.

If the release date is after 1993. Why '93? I don't disagree though. I came up with that number since I consider the first "Jurassic Park" to be the last truly great blockbuster. Afterward came all the crappy digital film making and bad CGI effects movies like The Mummy and Stargate.
