I remember seeing a pic of Bing Crosby sitting alone in a chair reading a newspaper on the gigantic sets created for The Emperor's Waltz 1948 ball room, sadly I haven't been able to find that pic on internet.
If it is sets it's impressive or in an actual real location, I don't know, from Indiscreet 1958.

Any one of those bible epics or sword-and-sandal movies from the 1950s and 60s; examples like Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments, Quo Vadis, Land of the Pharaohs, El Cid, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Spartacus. All those movies are from a long gone era. Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings tried but even that succumbed to CGI overload.

Great topic. There are so many, way too many to name, but here are a few from Orson Welles that come to mind. (more to come. . .) The Magnificent Ambersons The same elaborate staircase turned up in 1942's Cat People... ...and 1943's The Seventh Victim

All those movies are from a long gone era. Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings tried but even that succumbed to CGI overload. Great ones. From the studio era I'm fond of the magnificent Rasputin And The Empress (no pics here, sorry), which features some splendid back lot recreations of the courts and palaces of imperial Russia. Also, the Fred and Ginger musicals, from Flying Down To Rio on down, or up, as the case may be. The Wizard Of Oz deserves a round of applause, whether for its Munchkin village, the haunted forest, the emerald city of Oz. Gorgeous every step of the way. Also Metro, from many years later: the Gene Kelly musical The Pirate. To go back to the Thirties, RKO's King Kong and She deserve a mention. Same studio, many years later: The Devil And Daniel Webster (the same year's Citizen Kane has already been mentioned). Their 1947 Sinbad The Sailor is an opulent adventure film, Arabian Nights variety. David Selznick's pictures deserve a special mention, even before Gone With The Wind, with The Garden Of Allah, The Prisoner Of Zenda and The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer. A bit later on: Rebecca. Also, Duel In The Sun and Portrait Of Jennie.

Great topic. There are so many, way too many to name, but here are a few from Orson Welles that come to mind. (more to come. . .) Citizen Kane Ebert's dvd commentary is a great compliment for Citizen Kane. For instance, the Xanadu shots of Kane & Susan are really nothing more than a large soundstage with a handful of larger than life props. When we watch & absorb however, the way it's set up via character & setting embellishment, we see more in our mind's eye. There's technically no there there, & yet we're impressed with awe. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou impresses me... From the film festival, to their island compound, the Belafonte, & Ping Islands... & of course the Jaguar Shark, it's a beautiful montage of eye candy, not hurt of course by the colourful cast, 'crew', & costuming. Once Upon a Time in the West
There's a sweet spot of 'busy' eye candy going on here, infinitely rewarding upon re-watches. It's not like a John Ford pic with staple quintessentials... it's Leone filling the screen & sets with details, themes, & thousands of minute eye candies.

Great catch, doghouse. RKO (as Warners and others) so often used sets again and again to save money. When it came to recycling, Universal was no slouch among the "others." More stairs: The Wolf Man (1941) The Ghost Of Frankenstein (1942) Night Monster (1942) .jpg) Speaking of recycling, all three employed music cues by Hans Salter, Frank Skinner and/or Charles Previn, as did others possibly numbering in the dozens. And for good measure, the latter two used the same burning miniature at the climax: one with Ralph Bellamy, Evelyn Ankers and a tree matted in; one without. .jpg) Perhaps that should have been one for the "stock footage" thread.
