I've avoided spoilers, but, based on the trailers, my guess is 75% of TLJ will be rehashed ideas, mostly from ESB. It should definitely be more original than TFA... I hope.

25%. Rian Johnson never struck me as that type of director.

I'm saying 50%. Disney won't stand for this being too original.

It all depends on what someone considers rehash. If one considers the "rhyming" that Lucas talked about as a rehash, there may be plenty. It's how Star Wars works. But if you only consider what JJ did, with much heavier repeating of the story to be rehash, I think it will be minimal.

It only does because Lucas and Abrams decided to. Just to be clear, what's the difference between a rhyme and a rehash?

I haven't watched too many Bond films, but would you say that rhyming is along the lines of the formula for an Indiana Jones film (1-3)? Things like: - opening sequence with treasure unrelated to the main plot - scene where someone explains what McGuffin treasure Indie needs to secure before the bad guys get to it or use it to hurt people - scene somewhere where Indie gets romantic with the female lead - scene where Indie fights the muscle guy - etc.

I think Johnson may follow some sort of rhyming scheme because it's really become part of the way a Star Wars story is told. But JJ overdid that to the point of a rehash. I still loved the film, but have to admit he did that. I don't expect that in this film.

But Star Wars doesn't have to rhyme. It only does because Lucas and Abrams decided to. Just to be clear, what's the difference between a rhyme and a rehash? The way I understand it, a rhyme is a formula for a particular story franchise. For instance, the first six Harry Potter books "rhymed." No one could accuse them of being the same because their story elements varied from book to book, even if their basic plot beats were the same. A rehash is when stories within a franchise are extremely similar with few to no variations. A New Hope/TFA is one example, along with the first two Home Alones, first two Terminators, first two Hangovers. I notice that stories used to be able to get away with rehashing from themselves, but can't anymore.

Great films, IMO, but high on the 'hash. ;B All right, so it seems to be a matter of degree.

National Review: "Rerun of the Jedi." Amazing. Two films and 30+ years later, and we still have just one Jedi in the galaxy.
