Is this the film that actually made Sophia Loren a star? I remember reading that male lead Alan Ladd had to stand on a platform (out of view) in his romantic scenes with the taller Loren.
What I remember most is the beautiful location photography, worthy of David Lean.

I think it was one of several films she made in the mid-fifties that launched her career. Legend of the Lost, The Pride and the Passion, Aida, Two Nights with Cleopatra, etc.

The solved their difference in heights with shot like this. Alan Ladd got a very fat paycheck to act in this movie.

By her late teens, Sophia Loren was playing lead roles in many Italian features such as La favorita (1952) and Aida (1953). In 1957, she embarked on a successful acting career in the United States, starring in Boy on a Dolphin (1957), Legend of the Lost (1957), and The Pride and the Passion (1957) that year.
