The fifth entry and last Solo film of phase 1!
A film that I didn't think it would be pull off as well as it was. Especially in the modern climate where America isn't exactly cool with some of the outside world.
But what were your thoughts on it?

But what were your thoughts on it? 9 - Totally and completely nailed who Steve is before becoming Cap and it's hard not to see that skinny kid in him even now. The classic vibe and settings were perfect, the Red Skull was perfect, the opening scenes with the Tesseract were perfect and made me wonder if Odin intentionally left it with somebody on Earth and if he had forgotten about it or chosen to not pay attention to it for some reason. I wonder. Haley as perfect. Tommy was excellent. The whole thing left me wanting more by the end and hoping they would nail Steve in the modern world. They did.

7/10. Used to be a 6/10, but it has improved upon a rewatch. It's just a lot of fun.

7/10 but close to 8.
Great origin story and one of the better villains of phase 1. My main critique is the slow start, fast tracked middle and really fast end. The pacing is a bit off.

A 6.5/10
It's one of the weakest ones. Probably after Incredible Hulk the worst one.
The cast was good, the Alan Menken song was great and Captain America and Red Skull looked impressive....
...but Red Skull was a poor villain, the action scenes were forgettable and it was a bit tonally confused what with being a World War 2 movie where you then had soldiers running around with laser guns.

7/10. The first act of this is a 9/10 for me but the film falters a bit in its second half.

I do enjoy this one a lot though. Still one of my favorite MCU movies. Yeah honestly, I absolutely love Act one. Showing Steve Roger's struggles and burning desire to join the army was great, his origin story was great, I loved the characters, the setting, the training camp scenes, the action sequence in the lab etc... It had a lot of heart and really felt like a old WWII movie and feels grounded in the era of the story. My biggest problem of the movie is the aesthetic does feel really mismatched at parts. One of the reasons why I loved act I so much was because it felt like a war story and I was really into it. The second act, I agree, is what brings the movie down quite a bit. It's basically a montage of war, the weird guns show up and it becomes more of what you would see in 'The Avengers' or something . If TFA's second and third act were as amazing as the first it'd probably be my favorite MARVEL movie.

Gee, a bit surprised to see the largely negative reception. This is one of my favorites of the Marvel movies--a fine tribute to a character I've always liked, with a lot of heart and a great '40s atmosphere (but, then, I love the era). I prefer Act I to Act II, as @forceghostackbar and salomonj do (and I share Salmonoj's thoughts on this dichotomy), but even Act II is exciting, and the characters still behave like real WWII-era soldiers rather than contemporary actors pandering to modern-day mores. That's probably because it seems Johnston loves the era as much as I do (and has experience with it from The Rocketeer, from which he borrows repeatedly for this movie), but either way I greatly appreciate it. Perhaps the villain is a trifle weak (I remember he looked silly), but the focus is on Cap, where it should be. I wish more movies would be set in the '40s, though, but that's just my own taste. I have a few criticisms, and the pacing can be a bit off at times, but on the whole I really liked it. Also a great companion piece with this year's superb Wonder Woman, which addressed many of the same themes from a different angle. I gave it an 8-8.5, which means...something, I suppose.

Is he really any worse than Luddendorf or Ares? And Red Skull using the Space Stone for superweapons any different from Dr Poison having magic gas that makes super soldiers?

formersamhmd I can't speak for scabab, of course, but I thought that he wasn't any worse than Luddendorf and Ares; both Luddendorf and "Dr. Poison" are treated rather perfunctorily in Wonder Woman, which I found a bit of a disappointment in an otherwise very strong movie. I liked it when Ares was in-disguise; when he revealed himself as a god, he became far duller and more typical.

Is he really any worse than Luddendorf or Ares? He's probably on par with Ludendorff and slightly worse than Ares. None of them are particularly good villains so that's not really saying too much. At least Ares had a bit more of an interesting background and he wasn't really in the movie all that much because he was part of a plot twist instead. This one though yes. The magic gas didn't feel out of place with the tone of the movie that also involved Wonder Woman being made from magic. Captain America: The First Avenger though was a mostly serious movie with a well recreated look at World War 2, that wasn't otherworldly as Captain America was a result of science. Then at the end of the movie you had people running around shooting laser guns like Stormtroopers. A result of a magical space object.

8.5/10
Johnston directed a fun homage to the old adventure serials in a movie that actually gets better over time. It also has one of the best musical scores of any MCU movie (which is admittedly not saying much).
