Everyone loves the first movie American Graffiti. Why did the sequel do so poorly? Is this movie as bad as they say it is? What was its strong/weak points? Where did it go wrong?

D+
So I finally went back to it... because I wanted a DVD copy of the first, & the double feature was cheapest at amazon.
+ - Oddly(?) Terry Toad is the best character & performance here, like he had no F's left to give -both the actor & character alike- & that weirdly worked as the film passed. Alas, that's probably because the other 3 character stories were awful, so it stood out? - Milner's story was mediocre at best; at least his wasn't a headache. - Probably the best thing I could say about the movie is at least it tries to smooth itself out for the final 30 minutes or so. Yet getting there is an absolute trainwreck.
- - What a mess of a headache... & yet weirdly I can't fault the tone if that's where these ppl ended up? I feel like if American Graffiti had been an 8 season series, it was as if we'd jumped right to the finale season after it'd already been cancelled months prior. Having said that, I surely would never wish to even imagine the 6-7 seasons in between to get there. - Steve & Laurie in a loud mess... not sure that's who they'd be friends with. - Candy's story was utterly forgettable. I couldn't care a lick about any of those ppl. Come to think of it, every single one of the leads had pretty poor friends & companions... & yet, such is life??
More American Graffiti has to be the quintessential example of the grass is not always greener for a sequel. No matter how precious the characters were, they can still be violated lols.
