Great movie, cars, soundtrack, characters, story, & humour. I have never ever been bored watching this movie. I recently bought it on Blu-Ray and it was just nice watching it with a few more bells and whistles. I'm hoping that one day they release it with a directors cut with all the extra footage that hasn't yet been released. I remember somewhere hearing there was a longer cut of the movie. Always wondered, what more they removed. Glad this Lucasfilm hasn't gotten the Star Wars edit after all these years.
Discuss and rate?
What was your favorite, and least favorite parts of the movie? Is this movie overrated? Favorite or least favorite characters? Why has this movie stood the test of time?

OMG, OMG. This is on my Top 10 movies. Such a sense of time & place, that is rarely seen in a movie. The actors look like they just stepped out of a high school yearbook from 1962. A true modern classic. Impossible to know why anything stands the test of time, this does.
I can hardly pick a sequence I like best. The whole John, the king of the cruise, aged out of his mileu. Curt's wild time with the gang. Terry's night of everything going wrong. So perfect. I don't have a least favorite part.
Underrated, at least when it came out in 1973. It was nominated for Best Picture but beaten by The Sting.

I need to watch it again but I enjoyed it more than I expected. And that ending was a real punch in the gut. 9/10

9/10 - The unique filmmaking style gives it such realism. The constant drone of the disc jockey talking on the radio, the nostalgic music, kids cruising around in their cars, the dreamy quality of being a teenager in the summertime, made me feel like I was watching real life in 1962.
I also love the fun comedy and spontaneity of the movie, the way it jumps around to different subplots. Powerful ending. A true classic.

B+ only because some of the characters on their own can get annoying. I really like its final few acts with the gang, Wolfman, the race, & dawn.

The film has a nice outlandish feel about it too, as though it is all happening in a heightened universe. Not surprising, since Lucas then went on to do Star Wars. He wasn't the best of directors, as his Star Wars prequels attest to, but when he was in his element in the 70's, he knew how to make it all happen and work.

Ignore the sequel, More American Graffiti. It isn't even a good movie on its own and could dull the original. I ignore it, so maybe it doesn't.

A very good coming of age story with nice characters and use of locations. It goes to show Lucas was once a talented director/writer and he was capable of good films outside Star Wars.
