Sometimes I tune out of conversations and feel bad afterwards because I'm completely lost. Not to mention that it isn't polite to pretend to listen.
But some people can go on and on and on..

Nope. But I pretend that I'm too tired to listen when I need an excuse to get away from them....

The older I get, the more I do it, and it can be pretty unvoluntary. I try not to stray, but sometimes there's no way to hold on as that person drones on and on.

Oh yeah, I stop listening.
I get bored easily.
If during the monologue, I am asked a pertinent question that requires that I had been listening in order to answer it, I will say "You lost me the moment you started talking".
If the monologue continues to a conclusion, I will respond "What a guy, What a girl, What a World.". I'm surprised at how often that works.

All the time. It's like a muscle now. Bugs the hell out of friends and family but look I'm sorry, get to the fucking point and maybe I won't next time.

I can't blame the OP especially when you get someone who just goes on and on and on and won't stop talking you just kinda go through the motions trying to end the conversation at that point. lol

Like if I have stuff that I need to do that day I can't help thinking about it. Sometimes I catch myself and force myself to listen to what they are saying.

SandmanGood point. I imagine we all do stuff similar to that. like even assuming we are somewhat interested in what they are talking about, if they go on for too long i imagine i might drift off a bit to. but i guess it might partially depend on how much the other stuff is on my mind etc. but i would imagine, at least speaking for myself, unless something is pretty interesting that the person is talking about chances are ill drift off especially if they go on and on for a while.

I am going to sound like an asshole, but if a person makes me uncomfortable or just generally acts rude, I will zone them out basically.

I do that very often. I work in a hospital. Patients tend to tell me their life stories while I have to concentrate on my work.

In fact, if you think about it, the person who is doing most of the talking should have enough common sense to realize that the conversation is going nowhere fast and is making the other person feel uncomfortable.

Sometimes, but not to be rude. But when I don't know what they're talking about or I am distracted by something and can't concentrate on what they say.

Just when I'm at a bar or concert and it's so loud I can't hear the person so I just nod my head and pretend I heard it lol

I've got a guy at work that's going through a phase of droning on and on worse than he has for years. I think he's OCD or somewhere in the spectrum. If he want's to do something to our system he comes over and tells me about it because I'm the system lead. I immediately tell him to go for it anymore, because I know he's going to tell me every single detail that has brought him to want to do it. It doesn't help, he's like Sheldon with the 3 knocks 3 times with your name 3 times, he'll die if he doesn't get every last detail spewed out and that's often over 20 minutes of my life, sometimes way over.
