Thank you. By Richard Matheson...who wrote other novels such as I Am Legend (which is nothing like the movie and definitely worth a read as well) and Hell House (which i havent read yet but was adapted into at least one film)

Visually stunning if nothing else. Can't remember how much Williams layed on the schmaltz.

I like the movie, though flawed. I also love how its been re-made a few times since: Pretty Bones, the Shack. What Dreams May Come is the original.

Very interesting. Are any of those others any good? Not really. But if you liked Dreams then you might like the others.
To be clear, they're not "officially" remakes. But they might as well be (especially The Shack) since the subject matter and visual language are practically exact.

Saw it, remember almost nothing. I understand Werner Herzog had a cameo where he screamed "I cant get Klaus Kinski out of my head!"

Outside a few (comedic) moments, I found it hard to accept Robin Williams in the lead. The visuals were striking but I haven't watched it in a while so I don't know how it holds up. The big reveal was surprising. It's one of those tweener movies. It's not bad but not all that good, either. The Richard Matheson novel is outstanding. He is maybe the most diverse novelist I have read. He wrote horror, SF, fantasy, time travel, war, romance and even a few westerns. Not a great prose stylist but a superb storyteller.

I found it hard to accept Robin Williams in the lead. Why?

I like it but it was depressing. I like many films with Robin Williams, both comedy and drama. Flubber, Jumanji, One Hour Photo, Insomnia, Hook many others.
