I had been wanting to see the film for a while and yesterday I was finally able to. I have to say that i was very disappointed with it. The film had no heart, and I never felt connected with any of the characters. The story of Dunkirk is a great one and I was so surprised that Nolan didn't seem able to show the true spirit that Dunkirk brought out in people.

The story of Dunkirk is a great one and I was so surprised that Nolan didn't seem able to show the true spirit that Dunkirk brought out in people. I though it was both technically brilliant and deeply moving, so much so that I cried right through the last 15 minutes. It's easily the best war film I have seen since SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. The haunting scene of the lone spitfire, it's fuel tank empty - landing on the beach at the end is one of the most beautiful images I have seen on screen all year. Another wonderful moment that brought a tear to my eye was when the Captain asks Kenneth Branagh's Commander Bolton what he is seeing through the binoculars, and Bolton - seeing the armada of small boats heading their way. replies "home". Marvelous performances by Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Tom Hardy and the aforementioned Branagh. DUNKIRK is one of the year's very best pictures. This excellent film is both intimate and epic and gets a rare 10 out of 10 rating from me.

I do agree the acting was good - I love Hardy in everything, and Murphy and Branagh are always great. However, as I said, I wasn't moved by it. Before I saw it I was expecting to feel a lot of emotion, and to like it, as I know the story of Dunkirk well, and had high hopes for the film, but I felt disconnected with what was happening onscreen. Anyway, people like different things.

I think Dunkirk is the best film of 2017. Only challenged by Blade Runner 2049. It is also the best War movie I have ever seen. It may not have been true to historic events but a movie doesnt have to be. It was amazing. It would have been easy to make it one big action drama but the choice to make it character driven was a very good one. 10/10 for me.

Nolan doesn't want you to feel the characters, he wants you to be the characters.

6/10. A boring and overrated movie.

I think Apocalypse Now or Saving Private Ryan, are both superior.

Nolan doesn't want you to feel the characters, he wants you to be the characters. Well, he failed in that.

Not top-tier Nolan, but still good.

I just rewatched Dunkirk on Blu-ray and once again it was an incredible experience. I immediately connected with the characters and I even teared up at the end because of what happens to the characters. I heard from multiple people that they thought the movie had no heart, but I personally thought that this movie may have the biggest 'heart' or emotional impact of all of Nolan's movies. It's a 10/10 for me and after Blade Runner 2049 my favorite movie of 2017. It's probably also my 2nd favorite Nolan movie (behind Inception and tied with The Dark Knight).

Amazing film. It's the sensory wallop that Nolan delivers with the film is simply incredible, and super immersive as well. Nolan puts you right in the middle of the action, to spectacular effect. Probably the best film of 2017. 10/10

Nolan didnt have the budget or skill to show the big picture.

I think there are a lot of people that think Nolan can do no wrong, and for this reason love everything he does, good or bad. As someone who has no such feelings about him, I found the film lacking in heart and scope.

If you didn't see it in 70mm IMAX, you didn't see the film

I would be shocked if it won many awards, though. It doesn't have the current political message required to win Oscars.

I never felt connected with any of the characters. That was my problem with it too. Don't get me wrong, the visuals were great, and I liked the movie okay. But I didn't love it, because I hardly knew the characters and couldn't get emotionally invested in them.
