Just a bit of a preamble for those who don't know me, but I am a classic film lover who has spent the last couple of years confined to nursing homes and hospitals, so needless to say, I don't get out to see any new films.
With the Golden Globe noms announced today, I am wondering if any of you folks have heard about or seen "The Disaster Artist?" I am asking here because I really would like to know what normal people think.
On Oscar Night 2005, I attended a party honoring Martin Sheen, and seated at my table was Tommy Wiseau and a male friend. I had no idea who he was, but since he managed to get us an extra plate of cheesecakes, I thought him interesting. My friends spent some time talking to him, and he gave us ads advertising his film, "The Room." At one point, Karen Sharpe Kramer, the widow of producer/director Stanley Karamer, came to the table and struck up a conversation with Tommy. She said that Tommy was a film genius.
So a couple of weeks later, my friend and I took a trip up to the theater in Hollywood that was showing "The Room." It was a multiplex that had eight screens, the one next door was showing "Deep Throat." Tommy introduced the film. My friend and I survivied the longest half hour of our lives before walking out.
So is this sort of like an Ed Wood thing?

The cult following? Yes, it's the closest to Rocky Horror Picture Show thus far this century.

"The Room" did seem to have an audience participation thing going on involving plastic eating utensils.
I was also wondering if James Franco"s playing of James Dean led to him doing Tommy Wiseau uttering that great line, "You're tearing me apart!"
Guess I'm just getting to old. I posted a couple of picture of Tommy on Twitter for my friends who shared that night my account is @neurostutgeon

I've never seen it myself, but yes it has the Ed Wood-film type following, and I guess a lot of people get a kick out of it that way.

I'm going to see the Disaster Artist on Friday night. Not sure what to expect but the one review I saw was very enthusiastic.

OldAussie -
I will be interested in your review.
I found Tommy Wiseau to be a rather interesting character, spending most of the evening trying to figure out his very bizarre accent and wishing I was at the next table. After the evening events were over, a bunch of the guests from the main room - a tent set up in the parking lot - relocated to inside the actual restaurant. The folks at the table next to us either left or was dancing I’m the tent. One of the guests was sitting at the next table all by herself for a while, but was joined by her husband, Martin Sheen. By this time, the Oscar show was over, and Al Pacino and Adrien Brody came by. That made it a very interesting night.

There's a documentary about Tommy Wiseau called Room full of Spoons. Huh, didn't hear about it before. Gotta check it out.
