I'm in the middle of Far From True, which is the second book of the Promise Falls trilogy by Linwood Barclay. It's quite good so far.

still reading the second book of Elena Ferrante's neapolitan quartet. Almost done. Will then move on to book three. Also still reading Smyrna 1922. These books have taken longer than i would like, but I've been busy.

These books have taken longer than i would like, but I've been busy. I just bought the first book of the trilogy but I haven't started it yet. I've heard very good things about this series and I also read someplace that there is a movie in the works. Are you enjoying the books?

bess1971s I found the first book a little slow. It seems to be "fictionalized autobiography". It's set in Italy just after WWII so knowing something about southern European sensibilities would be good. I'm almost at the end of the second book. They are well written and I often tell my mom that some of what she writes reflect the attitudes of society when she was growing up. Yes, you should read it. I haven't heard anything about a movie. And I think it's 4 books, not 3. Enjoy and let me know what you think!

I just finished Hitler in Los Angeles by Steven J. Ross, which details the efforts of Nazis in the U.S. in the 1930s to overthrow the U.S. government through the use of violent terrorist tactics, sabotage, and propaganda. Anyone who believes that Nazi groups in America are, and always were, just small bands of discontented misfits should read this and learn how dangerous these groups can become if given an inch, based on their past efforts. One plan was to infiltrate Hollywood (for its propaganda potential) and carry out assassinations against prominent Jews and anti-Nazi liberals; Jack Benny, studio head Louis B. Mayer, Eddie Cantor, and Edward G. Robinson were targeted, along with outspoken anti-Nazi non-Jews such as Fredric March, James Cagney, and Charlie Chaplin. Nazi groups planned cyanide gas attacks on Jewish communities, as well as machine-gun massacres with stockpiles of weapons provided by the National Rifle Association (even then, they were the go-to outlet for murderous psychos). There were also incidents of sabotage in wartime factories, and well-attended "America First" rallies which were basically pro-Nazi gatherings. Germany's eventual plan was to conquer the U.S. and eliminate Jews, Catholics, and other non-Aryans, until only, presumably, only the "very fine people" were left. Interesting reading.

Bookwise I'm reading Red Shirts by John Scalzi - A parody of the Star Trek universe. It all takes place on the flagship of a federation type organization. A newly transferred ensign has noticed odd things about the ship particularly the fact that on every away mission some lowly crew member of the landing party dies.
