So what films did you find overrated/over hyped in the last 3 years?
Mine.
Get Out Not a bad film or anything I just did not get what the big hype was about. I didnt find it scary or even that amusing. It just played like an average direct to DVD flick for me.
Arrival I just seen this film last week. I think it started out really good. I really like how the gravity worked on the alien ship. However the aliens were really disappointing. Just looked like seafood to me. Plus the film just got boring in the last third. And how many times can you look at circles? Thats what this movie was to me octopuses and circles. Amy Adams is good though. Still I shouldnt give this the same rating I gave ID4: Resurgence.
The Conjuring 2 I actually didnt care for the original that much either. I just found it to be a regular haunting flick. Not much more. There is one scene I thought was eerie with the nun but aside from that I didnt see what so many others did.
Hell or High Water This one I thought I was going to really like. I really felt just about nothing for this film. Just a cop vs. robbers film. I found it forgettable. Although I admit the acting was good.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens Being a huge Star Wars fan for most of my life this one disappointed me the most. I do not think its bad or anything just underwhelming. It felt like a rehash of A New Hope. I didnt care for Rey and I thought Kylo Ren was a lame villain. Plus I hated how Mark Hamill got second billing yet was in the film for like 45 seconds. I wanted more Luke. Plus I hated seeing Han gt killed. Its like watching Indiana Jones or James Bond get killed. I was hoping to see Han and Luke together again. I just hope The Last Jedi will be better.

Wonder Woman...while good, is just a replica of Marvels tired formula. Gets more hype than it deserves because of a female lead, which is not really a big deal in this day and age of cinema.

I didn't totally love 'Arrival' either. I liked the alien language concepts, but the plot elements seems so hackneyed: fish-out-of-water specialist brought in by government to save the world, actual villain is the stuff-shirt bureaucrat who won't give the hero enough free rein to do her job. "Dammit McCowskey! You're a loose cannon and I'm taking you off this project if you don't get with the program!"

Not seen those horror flicks yet, but totally agree with you RE Arrival (dull), Hell Or High Water (forgettable movie with good acting) and The Force Awakens (why kill Han??!!). Didn't care for any of those movies.

2015 is too soon... I'll go since 2010... & most of my picks are good yet overrated together...
The Arrival - I agree, though it does fall into an overrated yet solid film for me. I only went thinking there'd be much greater payoffs than introspective ones. I rated it a B+ yet ppl gushing over it like it was going to change my life... not so f'n much. Birdman - again, I liked it enough on merit. Nice execution of the production/performances, alas there's simply not much there there. I blind bought it mere weeks after its Oscars, $5 in a bin at the grocery store, dvd- not a bad deal that. Dunkirk - I feel like this is what we get when Hollywood fails, very good films like Dunkirk are made out to be all timers. Wonder Woman - uh huh. It'd not make my top 10 of the genre & yet it's defining the year. Am I evil? I didn't pay to see JL & that was because of BvS. It was on par with Captain America: The First Avenger. Was that one an all timer? Nope. The Hobbit - yikes. Precious critics pun intended afraid of upsetting the PJ Middle Earth karma... it took its sequels' lack of magic & lore to finally accept that it was a rush job we could do without.

I don't know if I have a solid five (and I personally liked probably about 2/3 of "The Arrival"), but I do have one.
"Get Out"
I really like Jordan Peele, but I struggled at the time and now to understand why seemingly everyone loves "Get Out." It was a slow boil. OK, I'm on board. It spun a tale heavily rooted in racial tension in the USA. Still on board...I guess. Then I got bored. I saw what it was trying to tell me way before it started browbeating me with it.
Maybe it's just me, but I thought it was boring and uneventful. Great premise (and the lead actor was magnificent), but it didn't really go anywhere for me. Maybe just not my brand...but if this is where horror is going...well...

I probably could come up with different lists depending on how i look at things whether it's based on IMDb rating etc or how much $$$ a movie made in the theaters or Oscar stuff etc.
but just to use IMDb's Top 250 to select five movies i would go with (IN NO ORDER) paired a bit with $$$ made in theaters as this should give me a solid overrated list...
-Dunkirk (2017) (I found this movie to be quite boring, as i could not finish watching it due to boredom. but it's got a 8.2 average on IMDb and currently #130 in the Top 250 and not only that it also did solid $$$ in the theaters as the worldwide total was $525mil+)
-Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) (a pretty average/forgettable movie overall. but has a 8.1/10 average and made $378.9mil worldwide)
-Logan (2017) (a pretty average/forgettable movie overall. but has a 8.1/10 average and made $616.8mil worldwide)
-Hacksaw Ridge (2016) (i mildly like this but it's nothing special. it's got a 8.1/10 average score but in terms of $$$ it's not that overrated as it only made $175.3mil worldwide which is nothing special in the $$$ dept. so i would say out of the five movies i listed it's the least overrated of the bunch, but still overrated.)
-La La Land (2016) (i mildly like this but it's nothing special (while i have only seen it once so far it's the only Musical i gave a Thumbs Up). it's got a 8.1/10 average score with $445.7mil worldwide and Oscar hype BS and it's no where near THAT good.)
NOTE: there is currently fifteen movies from 2015 to date in the IMDb Top 250 and i have seen six of those.
NOTE: i am just excluding animated stuff as i don't really count these as legitimate movies as i see that stuff more for kids than adults. also, i imagine there is some movies i have not seen that could make the list above had i seen them.
p.s. i would say the cream of the crop level movies from 2015 for me are (IN NO ORDER)... Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation (2015)/Spectre (2015)/Shot Caller (2017). behind those (IN NO ORDER)... Ex Machina/Good Kill/Sicario/Some Kind of Beautiful/The Salvation/The Hateful Eight. those are the only movies from 2015 to date i scored a 7/10 or higher.
