The other day I heard a dj on the radio talking about this. He complained that no one he knows had ever heard of two of the artists. I'm quite sure he was referring to Simone and Tharp. It's okay to be ignorant of something, but an unwillingness to learn is sad. A few minutes on Google would have enlightened him. So, a DJ who plays nothing but what's on the station manager's playlist, and who would get canned if he deviated from it, sees himself as a repository of musical knowledge. I suppose so. Maybe he was hoping his audience would identify with his lack of knowledge. These days I only listen to the radio while driving around town. Most of the DJs I hear on the corporate stations are pretty boring in their attempts to be relevant.

The DJ should look these two artists up on Youtube and listen to their music. I use Youtube as my radio station of sorts. Unlike a lot of people I know, I buy physical copies of CDs. It is too easy to have your computer get infected and lose everything you had stored on it.

I'm willing to learn, but I won't pretend I knew of them before the nominees were announced.

A few minutes on Google would have enlightened him. 87 percent of the 220 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees to date have been men, or bands led by men. Probably as it should be, but some stations play very little by women, and there's very few people who trace the influence of women back the way they do for men.

I've been listening to music since the 1960s and I only found out about Simone when Bridget Fonda mentioned her in the 1993 movie, Point of No Return. And it was only a few years ago that I learned about Tharpe. It's not surprising because their songs weren't played on Rock/Pop radio. Simone leans more towards Jazz and Tharpe came up through Gospel, but her pioneer guitar technique was influential on many of the early Rock and Roll artists of the 1950s.

Yeah, I think the RR Hall of Fame is trying to correct that by giving those women the credit which was previously lacking. I just have this thing about stupid DJs. I like to think that somewhere, maybe an independent or a university station, they have someone intelligent in the position. As pippinmaniac suggested, the DJ could've looked up the artists on YouTube and then tried to encourage listeners to do likewise. That seems better than embracing his own ignorance by not even bothering to look up the reason why those women are on the list in the first place.

About bloody time. Depeche Mode's exclusion in favour of all the rest (except maybe Simone) is to me ridiculous
