Detective Pikachu gets release date following Ryan Reynolds casting
The Deadpool actor will play the titular role
For many Pokémon fans, Ryan Reynolds playing the titular character in Detective Pikachu seems fairly baffling. How will the Deadpool actor pull-off playing the beloved cartoon character?
Following the surprising casting news, Universal has confirmed a release date for the movie: 10 May, 2019.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Pikachu role will be ‘motion-capture in nature’ and that Reynolds’ particular Pikachu is a ‘self-styled investigator who is good at finding things’.
Goosebumps director Rob Letterman will helm the project — which starts shooting mid-January in London — while Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton will also star.
27 films to look out for in the first half of 2018

The story starts when Smith’s character’s father is kidnapped (presumably by Team Rocket), leading to the teenager employing the help of Pikachu. Newton — who recently had roles in Big Little Lies, Lady Bird, and Three Billboards — plays a journalist who helps the duo on their quest.
Detective Pikachu has been scripted by Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman with Universal distributing. Meanwhile, Reynolds will next appear in Deadpool 2, which reaches cinemas 1 June.

The teaser trailer for the 2018 Pokémon movie has been released
A new animation style and story is set to take place on July 2018.
A new trailer has been released to tease the 2018 Pokémon animated movie.
The new movie is the 21st Pokémon movie to be released and is set to continue on from the I Choose You saga of films that started with Pokémon's 2017 movie Pokémon I Choose You! But not much else is currently known about the movie at this time.
It's currently labeled as Pokémon the Movie 2018, but that's expected to change in the future.
The teaser pans across a crisp blue sea where fans see main character Ash in the new animation style. The movie is being collaborated on by OLM, who handle the animation for the series usually, and WIT Studio, who have worked on the Attack on Titan series.
Avid Pokémon fans will also notice a small tune familiar to the series, Lugia's theme, which seems to hint at the next movie focusing on the Johto region.
The movie is set to be released in Japan on July 13, 2018.
