what was so jarring about the movie? I thought it was brilliant how they stayed away from the norm. Everything sucked about the movie. Everything. Like someone else said on this board, it's like they were daring us to stop watching. Well I concede. I'll watch IX out of pure morbid curiosity, but I WILL NOT pay a dime to watch anything that Rian Johnson directs again. So I'm out when it comes to the new trilogy. Nobody should have touched this franchise besides George. Kennedy is a dope and not qualified, obviously. I thought it could be done and TFA gave me hope, but this movie kicked me right in the dick. The plot was stupid and excruciatingly boring. There were several things that made no sense and were complete plot holes. What happened to Snoke and Luke was a joke. Yoda scene was a joke. They ruined Hux and pulled me right out of the film when they turned him into a "making-fun-of-our-own-movie" joke. There was either no character development or bad character development across the board. They shit the bed with Kylo's character. They shit the bed with the entire First Order and its reason for existing. They brought in new Force powers and never developed them. They turned astral projection into some kind of life-sucking event when it's never been that way in past SW lore. They made a big deal about the Jedi Temple, tree, books, etc, and then dismissed them without explaining them in the least. I mean, I'm just being honest...you couldn't have made a worse movie if you'd tried. Funny you mentioned a lot of things I found really good. I guess there is going to be two camps now. Well at least people are talking about it, it won't go down as inconsequential.

Well at least people are talking about it, it won't go down as inconsequential. I wish it had been inconsequential. At least then I could look forward to future movies. This completely annihilated my desire to see the Solo movie. I couldn't care less about it now. And this is coming from someone who relentlessly defended TFA on this board and bought/read 95% of the new canon books and even some Legends material. As for "talking about it," yeah, I've been talking about SW for two years now, but I can tell you that once I calm down in a day or two, I fucking won't be talking about it. I won't be talking about SW at all anymore and that's a damn shame. It's given me years of entertainment and for that I thank George Lucas. But Disney can go to hell. I can already tell they fucked up Thanos in Infinity War. I have half a mind to skip that one. The guy's not a fucking human, but here we go with Disney doing things their own way and turning him into a tall-jawed human. Why the fuck does he have pupils? Thanos didn't have pupils!!! Naw, man, fuck Disney. People on this board have been telling me for two years and I foolishly debated them. No more. Fuck Disney. Their fiction has always sucked and I am embarrassed that TFA made me think otherwise.

But you're right: the Johnson trilogy can fuck right off. No interest whatsoever.

Garbage, such a strong word. I would call it amazing, but that's just me i guess. It's just you. I defended the fuck out of TFA. But this shit that Rian Johnson just pulled was infuriating. He shit all over the franchise and laughed when he did it. I'll boycott anything he works on - including the new trilogy - for as long as he's in Hollywood. He's a real piece of shit who doesn't deserve to shine Jar Jar Binks' boots.

The Hux speech scene before the SKB was used was unintentionally hilariously bad, and the actor playing him was too OTT throughout TFA. And Jar Jar Abrams F'd up this new SW trilogy just like he did with ST 2009.

Was Rey a Mary Sue? Yes. They say so in the movie. She was given her powers by the Force to fight Kylo and Snoke. It made her powerful enough to take on Kylo in TFA. It gave her to know how to fight him and best him. She just needed someone to show her how to control it when needed and that's where Luke came in. Notice how he only gave her minimal training. She just needed enough to know some philosophy and control.

We will have to dissect this further, but my feeling was that she was severely de-Sue-ified and resembled less a fanfic insert character: There was no Leia-hugged-first scene, she did not get all unwarranted attention (in fact she had to fight for Luke, she lost Kylo etc) and was not better at everything (she was just a powerful trainee) and she even came from lowly origins.
She was still badly written with god mode scenes like how she suddenly swings and fights super-pro with the saber without proper training again, how she conveniently is suddenly able to lift hundreds of stones to save the day when convenient to make her look good.
This Rey was bearable, thus: little to no Mary Sue complaints this time as with the R1-protagonist.

Well yes, but she pretty much just maintained her already achieved Mary Sue powers. She didn't add to it. What irritates me is that I was kinda hoping TLJ would give us an explanation to why Rey was so darn skilled at anything. Instead now we know that she's nothing really special except that she truly is so darn naturally good at everything.
