The writing in this film is pretty poor. But before I expand on that, this film just felt drawn out with repetitve beats and no cool 1v1 light saber battles. It would have been cool to see Snoke vs either Rey or Kylo, preferably both in a light saber duel like at end of Phantom Menace. But the way they kinda just quick kill him is disappointing. They teased the Luke v Kylo fight at the end too but shaded away.
So the bad writing:
The whole subplot of going to that planet with the casino to find a codebreaker to disable the tracker is completely useless and definition of filler. The First Order ships tracker never gets stopped because Finn and his crew are arrested. Then the First Order ship is blown up by the kamikazee woman, so the entire plot of getting the codebreaker just adds to the looong run time just to find something for Finn to do.
Kylo Ren falling for the Skywalker stunt at the end is also poor. But Luke Skywalker himself is almost useless in TLJ and is presented shoddily. You could have written his character out because the only thing he achieves in the plot is to cause a distraction to Kylo at the end. And writing a substitute reason for a distraction wouldn't be difficult. We dont see him train Rey properly, in something like Light saber dueling. He doesnt return to the real world and pass on Jedi religion to new followers or actively help the Resistance. He doesnt teach anything to Rey that she didnt already know in TFA.
Pretend Rey comes up with a distraction at the end so Poe and the people can escape. Now you dont need Luke Skywalker in the entire film at all.
Im really surprised this has such a high RT score. These are supposed to be professional movie critics who should understand writing and the flaws that come with it.
I personally give it 5/10, there was nice stuff between Rey and Kylo and I thought Oscar Isaac as Dameron was the star of the show. But the rest of the film is 1 note throughout and at times boring.

Boom. You're being generous with that 6/10, though. Without the nostalgia curve Hammill adds, what does this film amount to, seriously? 3/10? 4/10? And it's like five hundred minutes long.

Yeah Finn was given a stupid adventure but Poe’s was also pretty bad. The internal politics of the Resistance was lame. Laura Dern and all the Resistance members were poorly cast imo. I respect that they were mostly women but none were intriguing.
Agreed that none of the lightsaber battles were memorable, except for the fight against Snoke’s guards.

So Finn and company never accomplish what their mission had set out to do. That does seem to deflate the experience of following their journey. So in other words Luke and Yoda are just there to make Rey look like the most awesome MarySue who ever MarySued. Because... no explanation, she just is. See how everyone else reacts to her! (Picking up where TFA left off). The foundation TFA laid cannot be overcome. Whether Rian Johnson tried to or not. These episodic movies are just Disney parodies of the real thing.

You're right, I gave the score without knowing much else about other peoples problems with it because I didnt read any other reviews. But having done so now and also thinking about the film a little more, im dropping it to 5/10. I still really liked Oscar Isaacs role in this, hes one of my fav actors.

I didnt mind Poes story arc because he was allowed to show his creativity and leadership skills to justify his reputation as the best resistance fighter pilot but also hopefully a future leader. But Finns was totally useless.

(Picking up where TFA left off). Yup. I forgot about the pointless Yoda cameo too. Just seemed like pure fan service and nostalgia reach more than anything actually purposeful.

Laura Dern’s Mrs Slocombe, Carrie’s daughter Sillie Lourd and the Tall Blonde Lesbian just didn’t carry their lines with conviction.

Oh, wait: according to the audiences on Metacritic and RT, it does!
