just back from seeing it, believe the hype, it IS that good... go in with no spoilers as well if you can. I stopped watching trailers back in like September and wow, it's surprising, thrilling and its something the franchise has needed for a while now, something different, think Rogue One but a bit more emotionally impactful imo.
Great stuff, expected no less from Rian Johnson!

IMDb rating is a little lower than expected, 8.1 and still dropping. Granted, with every new movie as huge as this there are always going to be a LOT of people who hate it for whatever reason, especially Star Wars. I've yet to see it so can't judge.

Any big film like this the haters always come in and mass vote giving it 1's. It's like DC_Fan with Marvel movies. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 93% which is most likely close to accurate.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I thought it was terrible. Like prequels level bad. By all means see it for yourself, I hope you like it more than I did. Once everyone on the board has seen it we can have a proper discussion, I'll be curious to see what people actually enjoyed about it. I can't critique it too much without getting into spoilers but I'll say there's way too much comedy and barely any semblance of an actual story. It's just goofy nonsense. It felt like a Star Wars spoof.

Isn't it normally the other way round? All the nerds give these kind of films 10s. Then normal people eventually get round to watching it and the score slowly tumbles when they find out it isn't very good. I dunno, I don't pay much attention to these kind of films, but that's how I thought it worked. Haven't watched a Star Wars film since I was a teenager, didn't like them then, so not gonna like them now.

Alright, so... Yoda was great. Totally unexpected and didn't feel tacked on as much as you'd expect.
Snoke's death was executed well, even though I hoped for more - hell, some - of his backstory. I especially liked how Kylo didn't turn good afterwards.
Luke's death has me conflicted. It was executed nice, but how the hell did he die if he wasn't ACTUALLY there? I like that he fucked with Kylo's head one last time, but wtf?
And speaking of odd deaths, how the hell did Leia survive?
Phasma. Most overhyped character with little to no payoff since...Maul? Dooku? Jango Fett?

I saw it Sunday morning before the NFL games... found it really meh. 6 out of 10. My preferred of the modern batch remains Rogue One.

The Last Jedi was better than Force Awakens by far.

I don't get the fans that hate it on this level, it's like we saw completely different movies.

The Rose character is mentally handicapped. Del Toro's character talks like Roger Rabbit. The story doesn't even make sense. I've gone into detail on the TLJ thread on the Star Wars board so I'm not going to get into spoilers here. TFA wasn't that great either, but TLJ cranks the forced humor to a whole new level and ruins a beloved character to boot. I also need to take you to task over this comment: Rogue One is arguably the best overall film in the Star Wars saga. There are emotional stakes and every central character pays the ultimate price. There were zero emotional stakes in this movie. It was all comedy.

The Last Jedi was better than Force Awakens by far. I'll agree, only because there was more there there with TLJ. I really despise that phrase, & yet... there.. it is. I think I'm more fascinated with the standalone SWs now... Rogue One is still the finest since ESB.

There were zero emotional stakes in this movie. It was all comedy. I agree with you that TLJ wasn't good; maybe I'm not as harsh as you since I gave it a 6 out of 10, and you sound like you're giving it a 1 or 2. But I wouldn't have a problem lowering the score a bit more, to a 5, maybe. And yes, I absolutely loved Rogue One. That was a poignant, beautiful movie with true character development and true emotion, and in a movie, R1, that also had good action and suspense, and tied up perfectly with Episode IV, actually giving to Episode IV more substance, by the means of realizing how many sacrifices the Resistance had to make to even get to the initial scene of Episode IV. But the one point I don't agree with you, is that I found this movie TLJ pretty humorless. I don't really mind the Star Wars brand of humor (I actually like it), as in Hans Solo's snide remarks, R2D2, Chewbacca, and so forth. This movie? When they tried, it seemed phony and not funny. The movie actually felt too somber to me and without the Star Wars humor trademark. So I don't think they "cranked" the humor; I don't think it was all comedy; I think they just weren't good about it.

I enjoyed it. Thought it was funny that they simply blew off so many of the things fanboys had been speculating about for the past couple of years and, unsurprisingly, it was a much better film for it.
Also I felt Rogue One was the weakest in the whole series. Took me back to 80s Dr Who with so much needless sacrifice of unfleshed out characters and too.much world hopping. I think the potential was there for a poignant film, but they weren't interested in making one. And Tarkin and Leia? Thought I was playing a PS3 game (and yes, I deliberately didn't say PS4).

I loved it. I keep reading all of the threads about how terrible it is and I just do not understand it. Besides the worthless Rose and flying Leia, I have very little complaints. It was very well done and the first 15 minutes were the best space battle that was ever put on screen. Kylo is a very good character too.
