Exactly!! Why pose hypothetical questions about Snoke when we don't know jack about him!?! I could say Snoke is Plageus and it wouldn't mean jack! I could say Snoke has lived 10 times as long as Yoda and trained more than all the Sith Lords who ever lived combined. So no Luke isn't. I could say Snoke is a boy Force using wunderkind who has that disease that makes kids look like old people. So Luke should be farther along. Heck, throw a fart into the wind and see if flies! Make up anything you want! Whatever say is right! Or whatever you say is wrong! Cuz... Just because, okay! And because Disney gave us nothing to go on Snoke, any "just because" answer is as good as anything or nothing at all. Actually the question was: Yet Luke cant cast an illusion without dying from exertion? Wouldn't Luke be as strong in the force, at this point of his mastery, as Snoke? So the question was about Luke, not Snoke.
Hmm... okay. But personally it's still not an easy question to answer since we don't have anything to go on as far as Snoke's mastery in comparison. Just what we saw briefly in the throne room. And Snoke's revelation that he was manipulating the shared Force visions of Rey and Kylo. But while that appears to be similar, I'm not sure that's the same type of Force power that Luke was using.

I agree that its not the SAME Force power, and I'll even concede that Snoke may be MORE powerful than Luke (we'll never really know though). But my opinion is that Luke should have been at least powerful enough, as a Jedi master of many years, decades even, to do this without then dying from the exertion.
I didn't have a problem with him dying, because I figured that was going to happen anyway. I just minded HOW he died. An illusion... exertion... pfft...
Also, I would've like it if he had stayed on the island, his story not fully resolved, and then JJ could bring him back for more in Ep 9. But again... NOPE.

Well, he's definitely going to be in 9...just as a Force Ghost.

So, I'm wondering... For me the single biggest "issue" was how Luke died. There are a lot of other issues but I'm willing to accept those as different decisions than I would have made, but still respect Rian Johnson's decision to go different.
Would it have made a difference if Luke had shown up on Crait in person instead of as an illusion and kicked some real ass before dying? Would that have been enough to skew this movie to the positive side as opposed to the negative that a lot of us SW fans seem to think it is?
For me, yes. The central issues were Luke and Rey. Rey I think gets what she needs out of this story and Luke doesn't. So if both of them had come out of this more upbeat I think that would have made us feel like the movie was hopeful as opposed to meh.
Thoughts?

Thoughts? For me, Luke showing up on Crait and getting killed means that Kylo Ren kills Han in one movie, then Luke in the next. Kylo is a good villain, but he isn't worthy of that in my opinion. This way Luke truly defeats Kylo by using his hubris to buy time for everyone to escape. Now...was him just giving himself over to the force slightly out of left field? Yes. But if he had to die (which I admit is debatable) it was better for him to go this way than with a showdown on Crait.
