I am reading the old IMDb comments threads on this film. It's surprising so many people didn't like it. I thought it was pretty good. 7.7/10
Anybody else see it?

It's not horrible but the twist makes it hard to root for one of the characters. 6/10. Annoyed they brought out Andy Garcia for a split second cameo.

You mean the twist that happens in the first 15 minutes? I wouldn't call that a twist.
What would you have done in his situation?

I agree about Andy Garcia. I didn't even know he was in the film until I saw the end credits.
I wonder how much he got paid for that cameo.
(I am almost completely insulated from Hollywood pre-release advertising nowadays. I only found out this film existed when I saw the DVD at the library the other day. lol)

The two person drama plays out fine until, of course, things start to go wrong with the starship and an “action” ending is devised bring the plot to a resolution. For a major awards season release, it was pretty weak tea.

I loved it. I thought it really showcased Chris Pratt's range...I'm thinking he's got a lot more chops than people give him credit for.
For me it played out like an extended Twilight Zone episode...which is a positive...it felt like, at its core, an old sci-fi story. Didn't love the ending, but as a whole, I thought it was a way above par sci-fi movie.
I adored the nods to "The Shining." Both the obvious (the bar, even down to the camera angles) and the subtle (loner trapped in a decadent, enormous, but empty setting) came off well...and not too derivative. I think, and hope, time will be kind to this movie.
No spoilers below:
What I didn't like about the ending is that Pratt's character (in a situation like this) seems like he'd have to experience some consequences for his decision. He made a sacrifice, but I didn't feel his character really learned anything at the end of the day. The big one he made was admirable, but I felt like the story let him off light. Something like "Ex Machina" dealt with something similar (but still much different) a little more accurately in a sci-fi context. Consequences of a human making a decision that sort of transcends or supercedes humanity...
...If that makes sense?

I did see Jurassic World and Zero Dark Thirty, but he didn't leave any lasting impression on me in either of those. I've never watched Parks & Rec, except for a few glimpses while trapped in airplanes. After seeing his performance in Passengers, I see that he's quite a stunning specimen. Agree! bits of The Shining Moon Silent Running Ex Machina 2001 Sunshine and several other films I enjoyed this film more than Gravity, The Martian, and Interstellar. It was great up until the third act, where, as mikef pointed out, they resorted to some pretty weak contrivances with the "action" ending.

I was expecting something else other than Titanic in space. It's not a bad film but it's not great either.

I was expecting something else other than Titanic in space. It's not a bad film but it's not great either. For me, Titanic falls in with all the other stories that involve a large group of people experiencing a disaster together (Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Poseidon Adventure, Independence Day, Armageddon, etc). Yes, there's a love story. But the barriers between the social classes is at the heart of the film. Passengers is more about loneliness and isolation. More like The Shining, or Alien, or Halloween, in that regard than like Titanic.

I just saw it recently. Awesome movie. I originally avoided it because I assumed it would be some cheesy Hollywood star movie disguised as a Sci-Fi, what with the 2 leads in it, but it's actually the opposite. Great Sci-Fi with some really cool ideas. Wish it were longer.

I thought that "PASSENGERS" was okay.
I liked the Performances of Laurence Fishburne & Michael Sheen in it.
