The Monkees are sometimes talked of as a cheap rip-off of the Beatles and, assuredly, that is what they were intended to be. If the Beatles were the Fab Four, the Monkees were the pre-Fab Four. At first, only their voices were heard on recordings and the TV show: all the producing, sound mixing, and even the playing of the instruments were done by other people. Meanwhile, the anarchic humor of their television show caught the attention of some discerning critics and viewers (including me). When the Monkees finally insisted on producing their own records, playing their own instruments, writing their own songs, and touring they really came into their own. Their final album The Birds, The Bees, and the Monkees is a truly fine effort that will be well worth your time and money.
Which is not to say I enjoy all of their songs. Indeed, the ones they had the biggest hits with are mostly the ones I like the least. Especially, the damn “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” I’m sure their audiences loved hearing a bunch of juvenile mop tops telling them how empty their lives were. I have the same reaction to Paul Simon’s Sounds Of Silence. “And the people bowed a prayed to the neon god they made.” Yeah, right. All except you, eh Pauly? John Lennon’s Nowhere Man has a similar theme to these two but is redeemed because Lennon includes himself among the nowhere people. But this is a minor matter and just a pet peeve of mine.
The Wikipedia article on the Monkees report (based on books about the Monkees) actually met the Beatles during the recording of Sgt Pepper and the two groups seemed to get along fine. Mike Nesmith has said that he asked John Lennon if Lennon considered the Monkees to be a cheap rip-off. Lennon then replied, “I think you're the greatest comic talent since the Marx Brothers. I've never missed one of your programs." I checked a couple of books I own, The Lives Of John Lennon by Albert Goldman and The Beatles: A Biography by Bob Spitz. Neither the Monkees as a group or Nesmith as an individual appear in the indices. I’ll need to look deeper into this alleged meeting although I tend to believe it happened.
I guess I written all this just to say, as an answer to the O.P., that I believe that the Monkees were an important part of the history of ‘60s rock and roll and that I still enjoy much of their music. Also, their TV series was a noble experiment. Nothing exactly like it had appeared before.

I didn't like their TV show - too madcap and unfunny.
Like some of their songs though - mostly the hits.

I liked them when I was 8. They were an okay pop band in their time. I still can't wrap my head around Jimi Hendrix opening for them in some shows. I would like to have seen the looks on the faces of the audience. I still like some of their music in Head.

Pretty good. Favorites A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You Pleasant Valley Sunday Valleri Back then, I saw them as a threat to the Beatles. THE MONKEES OUTSOLD THE BEATLES AND THE ROLLING STONES IN 1967. Yes, you read that correctly. In 1967, the year of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Between the Buttons, and Their Satanic Majesties Request, The Monkees outsold both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones—combined mentalfloss.com/article/66101/11-things-you-might-not-know-about-monkees

I liked them. Some folks were putting them down and saying they weren't a real band, and in the beginning it was true, but before the series went off the air they became a real band, and a rather good band I thought. Several of their songs have held up very well over the years.

I watched the show. One of them was super rich thanks to his mother inventing Liquid Paper?

I watched the show. One of them was super rich thanks to his mother inventing Liquid Paper? That was Mike Nesmith. He (and his mother) were from my home town, San Antonio, Texas and we are both "Mikes." Here's Nesmith mentioning our mutual roots-city in a song.
