"the same set served as the Flouds' New Mexico home in 1950's Fancy Pants." Is this it ? Doghouse6 That certainly looks like a glimpse of the upper level gallery, with Ball standing just about where Swanson was when round-the-bend Norma said, "Oh yes...down below, they're waiting for the princess..."

HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCEROR'S STONENOMINATED Best Art Direction-Set Decoration Stuart Craig (art director) Stephenie McMillan (set decorator) Too many images to post 'em all - high level maintained for the entire series .. CGI and real, blended, melded and very workable. It was done by MAGIC, me thinks. [

IMHO, art direction can be an integral part of a movie's success or failure. Nowadays, most "art direction"--interiors and exteriors are CGI, which I consider cheapening. So very true, snsurone. Art Direction is an integral part of every film's artistic vision. And I, too, prefer the "old fashioned" way. I'm never a fan of CGI in ordinary art direction, though in some instances it can enhance a set or a landscape, if necessary, which in the old days would have been done with optical effects. Too much of it (and especially if it's obvious) destroys the joy of the artistic unity, in my opinion. I love the art direction in all the films you mention, among so many, many more. There are, truly, too many to name. I'm always amazed at the artistry of the great art directors who create a world within a world that carries an audience through a narrative in so many beautiful and often amazing ways.
There was a brilliant artist named Jack Cosgrove, whose paintings provided backgrounds for GWTW and other films. Too bad there is nobody today of that artistic caliber, and as such, backgrounds have to be CGI.

1920s - 2010s Best Production Design Academy AwardsThe Academy Award for Best Production Design recognizes achievement for art direction in film. The category's original name was Best Art Direction, but was changed to its current name in 2012 for the 85th Academy Awards. This change resulted from the Art Director's branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) being renamed the Designer's branch. Since 1947, the award is shared with the set decorator(s). It is awarded to the best interior design in a film.
