According to Wikipedia he released 50 studio albums, ain't got time for that. Which ones are best/essential, besides Kind of Blue?

If you're looking outside the seminal 'A Kind Of Blue', obvious choices would be 'Sketches Of Spain', 'Bitches Brew' & 'In A Silent Way'.

Depends on which period you prefer as he went through several:
Birth of the Cool = cool jazz Bags' Groove = bebop 'Round About Midnight = hard bop (First Great Quintet) Sketches of Spain = orchestral jazz (with Gil Evans) Kind of Blue = modal jazz Miles Smiles = post-bop/avante-garde jazz (Second Great Quintet) Bitches Brew = jazz fusion On the Corner = psychedelic funk jazz
Depending on which of these styles you prefer there are more albums like them. I'm not a big fan of cool jazz, but I think the rest is pretty essential. If I was to suggest a "core" collection it would be:
-Birth of the Cool -Workin'/Steamin'/Cookin'/Relaxin' (these albums are all from two studio sessions the first great quintet had) -'Round About Midnight -Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain (Davis's spellbinding work with Gil Evans) -Milestones, Kind of Blue -ESP, Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti (best of the second great quintet) -Filles de Kilimanjaro, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, Live-Evil, On the Corner (best of electric Miles)

Start with Man with the Horn and go in chronological order.
That's my favorite Miles period, at any rate.

On The Corner and Jack Johnson are my joint favourites, as of today. But pretty much anything from his electric period is essential for me.

I started with his first great quintet, the one with John Coltrane. They made the titles called:
The New Miles Davis Quintet (1955) Round About Midnight (1957) Walkin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (1957) Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (1957) Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (1959) Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (1959) Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (1961)
I dig 'em all, great stuff. Of course there are many other masterpieces but I found these a good place to start.
