Who was the Engineer, and why was he so hostile toward the Earthlings?
Which engineer? If you mean in beginning of the movie, I don't think he was being hostile. I think it was an experiment that went wrong. If you mean the one that they woke up at the end of the movie, then I think he saw humans as specimens in need of killing, much like we would see one of the face huggers as something that should be killed. Not a useful analogy at all. (a) Facehuggers didn't speak English. (b) The Earthlings were trying to engage with the Engineer. They weren't trying to kill it or use it parasitically, the way the Facehuggers were treating Earthlings.

Too many dumb characters in this making really dumb choices. I remember being impressed with the atmosphere when I saw it in IMAX 3D but thats it. Really disappointing film from Sir Ridley Scott imo . Fassbender was the only good performance in this . 5/10

In the Next Movie, I really hope that Ridley Scott will have the Queen Alien in it and also in the end will have it end up killing David (Michael Fassbender).
It would be the Perfect Case of a Creation Killing It's Creator!

B) My point being that if the thing before you is gross and beneath you and potentially dangerous, you're just as likely to kill it as interact with it. Folks kill bugs all the time. Folks kill animals all the time. Folks kill PEOPLE all the time for that matter. I didn't find it hard to accept that the Engineer found them "unworthy" and so decided to kill them. Sure, it was extreme, but not out of the realm of possibility.
Also, maybe he just went crazy from along hibernation?

A) Neither did the Engineer
They were trying to speak to the Engineer. The android had attempted to reconstruct the Engineer's language. We have no way of knowing how successful his attempts were because the Engineer reacted so violently without the audience being shown any reason why. If a dog or bird or serpent started trying to speak to me in a human-like language, in what appeared to be a non-threatening manner, I would at least try to see what it was trying to say before I tried to kill it. Out of surprise if nothing else.

Out of surprise if nothing else. 1) Fair enough. It was abrupt. I guess we'll never really know. But you know what else I thought was a possibility? What if David did NOT translate accurately? What if he said something to spur him on; to MAKE the Engineer act the way he did?
2) You're braver than I am. If a dog or bird or serpent talked to me I would shit. Fuck communication.

1 Thing that I have always wondered was Which 'Human Character' was a BIGGER Human Villain in "PROMETHEUS" ?
Weyland (Guy Pearce) or Vickers (Charlize Theron) ?
Now I have always thought that it was Vickers but I am very curious to know what other fans have thought about it.
