One noted director was an established stills photographer but I have forgotten who. Can anyone jog my memory? 1. Anton Corbijn?2. Wasn't Tarantino a video store clerk before directing? 1. Brilliant! That is exactly who I had at the back of my senile mind, having watched Control (2007) earlier this year.
2. He was, for quite a few years. But even if you do not count that as a profession integral with the film industry, I would still disqualify him as he had studied acting seriously and taken a few small professional parts before his video store days. I can imagine him taking home two or three films each night as a permitted perk, which was a great foundation for his career.

He was always one of my favourite's, mostly for his work with Depeche Mode, in particular the tour visuals, which he still does now
