Do you think when you start a tv show, that you should always start from the beginning or do you think that it does not matter where you start ? Or do you think it depends on the show ?
I think you should always start from the beginning no matter what.

I wouldn't watch something without starting from the beginning, and I'd not miss any episodes in order. But I'm pretty OCD about stuff like that. I don't expect other folks to be just as OCD.

Depends on the series, & how well you can figure things out without it being explained to you . Example: I started watching NYPD Blue 3rd season in, didn't have a problem following. At that time reruns would be shown. So after S3 was done, I went back & watched the first 2. On the other hand, something like LOST is better from the beginning.

there are some shows that rely heavily on story arcs. and some are more subtle/noteworthy than others.
that being said, once you watch a show in binge mode -- either from dvd's or hulu/Netflix, you are shocked at the amount of time [literally none] is given to some story arcs. [take a look at Beverly hills 90210 when Kelly was hooked on cocaine to the time she was approached intervention style -- it was like a month. that so doesn't happen in real life. but when you watch the show in prime time it seems so much longer.
there are a couple of shows where the story arcs take a back seat... the x files comes to mind. the star trek type shows.
however, i would not want to watch the episode if i can't catch it from the VERY beginning -- even catching the end of the show beforehand. i dislike not getting everything.

Generally yes. Even with things like game shows I prefer to watch from the start (oh, how I wish vintage game shows were on Netflix!)
But sometimes it isn't possible. I sometimes watch old shows from the 1950s/1960s for which the early episodes are lost and only the later seasons survive, in that case I don't have much of a choice.

I think you should always start from the beginning no matter what. As a rule I always start from the beginning. Much like another poster that replied I'm pretty fanatical about things like that.

I usually fast forward to the good part, then finish, then take a nap.

That's like watching a spin-off but not the main series. Or like not watching a movie from the beginning. Or like watching a sequel but not the 1st movie.
Of course that anyone with a brain can figure out what's going on. The problem is that you won't have the same emotional connection to the story and characters. Callbacks won't make you feel anything.
Therefore, you should always watch a show from the beginning. Even if it's an anthology.

Usually when i first get into a show it is hardly the beginning. way back when i first got interested in star trek tng it was in its seventh and final season. and even then i didn't see it in prime time. i caught part of an episode late sunday night and was instantly hooked.
if it wasn't for my friend who was in love with the show i would have never seen the first season until much later. he had bought each episode on vhs form [yeah, how old is this story?] and i borrowed them from him every week.
nowadays where we have streaming, hulu and Netflix, among others to keep us posted.

Yes, I always start at the beginning. The only instance I can think of otherwise is when I started watching "Law & Order" as it aired -- I think I joined in Season 3. With our options today, I'm sure I would have gone back and watched S1 and 2 first.
I do watch "Better Call Saul" and have not seen "Breaking Bad" (yet). I will eventually get to it, though. I still consider it a different show, so I've watched from the beginning (and it is the beginning, anyway).

Yes, BETTER CALL SAUL is a prequel, but the 1st scene of every season premiere takes place after BREAKING BAD. Also, season 3 has a lot of callbacks.

Depends on the show. when people ask about watching classic Dr who for instance, I usually advise starting with some of the colour episodes rather than the early black and white ones, which can seem a bit slow to people used to the flashier NuWho for instance. and then there are shows where each epusode is a self contained story so it doesn't really matter what order you watch them in - many of my favourite shows are like this - Minder, the Professionals, The sweeney etc. Different if it is a series with a continuing storyline.

Although we know from the show that something bad happened with him from the Breaking Bad universe, I figure we will learn about it in the new show. We already know from the main plots of the the main show that the dude is pretty self-destructive.

Something like NCIS, you can parachute in anywhere, it's so episodic with rare continuing story arcs. Criminal Minds is the same way pretty much.

Depends on the show. With Twin Peaks the Return definitely yes, you have to watch the first two seasons. Won't hurt to watch the movie either. With the X Files you can skip the monster of the week but you have to watch the mythos eps to get any idea of what's happening.
Other shows it's not necessary. I started watching Arrow late in season 2 and quickly caught on. Then I watched season 1 and the other s2 eps.

I can't think of any reason why someone wouldn't start a TV show from the beginning.
