He's an alien - maybe his species have more than one lifespan?
Also - because killing off the cute alien in a kid's movie wouldn't have been good for business.

Because it's not uncommon for E.T. aliens to do that sort of thing, where they come from its rather common.

I'd need to watch it again, but the idea that ET was dead would have been from characters' perspectives, not from a third-person omniscient perspective. The logical conclusion is that the characters were wrong. And after all, they were dealing with an alien physiology, so it's not surprising that they'd be wrong.

An interesting theory. But the movie doesn't say he didn't die. In fact in the movie they say he died. Let's pretend he didn't die though. How did he get so sick that it looked like he died, and then magically come back from the brink of death? Who said in the movie that ET died and what kind of expertise they have with alien anatomy to determine that?

ET and his people form a symbiotic cycle, what affects one affects the other. You must understand this.
When they came back, ET came back. Just when you think he is out they pull him back in...

I used to think this movie was expertly crafted but I tried watching it a couple of years ago and couldn't get through it.

How did he get so sick that it looked like he died, and then magically come back from the brink of death? His connection to Elliott kept ET going until it almost killed Elliott. The connection to his people, restored when they came back to earth, revived him.

Without completely guessing, tell me where in the movie do they explain how E.T. came back from the dead. We won't even go into how he got sick. How did he come back from the dead? His people have healing powers. E.T. demonstrates it by healing Eliot's cut finger and more importantly by reviving the flowers. The latter is more important because it demonstrates their restoration powers can work from a distance. When his heart-light glows, that indicates his people have come back for him, and it's implied that they are reviving him just as he revived the flowers.

Also - because killing off the cute alien in a kid's movie wouldn't have been good for business. Catherine Schell was a cute alien. ET was not.
