Aren't we at saturation point? Doesn't it seem like every film follows the same tropes and formulas? How many ways can you film superhero battles?

I loved super heroes but I havent watched any since Avengers 2.
Even if Hollywood wasn't so feeble with storytelling, it is a limited genre in terms of dramatic potential.
I watch a lot of spaghetti westerns and they got remarkable variety out of a limited genre environment (town, horses, guns) but you had actors and music and the anonymous nature of the characters.
If the movie has Captain America you know it wont end with him having his hands crushed and needing to rig a gun holder with a cemetery marker.
Can anyone guess the movie I am referring to?
Additional hint.
After the showers comes the sun.

Yes, yes, and yes (from someone who likes superhero flicks when they’re fun and light).
Why? I’m not exactly sure myself. I dunno, they align with the zeitgeist at the moment? But wherefore that zeitgeist, then? Perhaps a bigger question than we have room for.
To be sure, there are some very good superhero movies; two of them, Wonder Woman and Spider Man: Homecoming, came out just this year. But in light of all the lousy ones? Yeah, the genre deserves a break—and to come back all the stronger in the future.
The usual riposte is about the number of westerns in the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s—an argument that I do not find all that persuasive, as they were (1) spread out over a long period of time, (2) often b-movies, (3) in the best, a-movie cases, directed by fine, personal-style directors like Ford, (4) usually of fine quality, (5) appealing to a wide audience, not just comic-book fans, (6) not parts of goddam “shared universes,” (7) able to ring multiples changes on the formula, and (8) not self-referential, a quality that eventually becomes decadent.
Apologies about the rant. Getting it out of my system, I suppose…

We are and have been, but they're still good and ambitious. I had a great time with Guardians 2, Spiderman Homecoming, Wonder Woman, and Thor Ragnarok, and I admired Logan for it's guts. I don't think any of these movies will make my top ten of the year, as far as popcorn moves are concerned I preferred Last Jedi, War for the Planet of the Apes, and Kong Skull Island, but they're all still very good and fun.

That's not the reason why people keep watching them. That's the reason why Hollywood keeps churning them out.

I really really don't think market forces have any role in what they make. There is no competition for the studios so why would they be affected by markets? Even when a movie bombs in the US they claim they made all their money in Asia.
They use superheroes because they are among their company assets and the comic book genre was created by tribal associates of the studio owners so they feel it is their culture.
They lack imagination so remaking Spider-man or Batman a 100 times is a no brainer (literally).
Where they may go from here is mash ups--Planet of the Apes vs the Avengers.
Or, they remake Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a black or asian heroine.
In fact, I bet if Disney does a remake of ALIEN Ripley will be a shade darker.
I should take bets. I know I will be proven right.

People keep watching them because they are entertaining movies. Like any genre there will be hits and misses. This year had a couple good superhero movies and a couple bad superhero movies.
I go seen superhero movies because I love the tropes and formula.

Because I'm a fan and I happen to enjoy them. Really I can't get enough of those superhero films if I'm being honest.

This can be simplified to "Why do people watch movies?"

I thought Logan & Wonder Woman were flat out fantastic and I am looking forward to see what Matt Reeves does with The Batman . Also looking forward to the Deadpool sequel & the next X Men film . Overall, I find some super hero movies to be a great form of entertainment.

Dramatic arcs. It's not like I'm watching MCU films just for kicks, I'm on the journey with it.
X-Men 2.0, Deadpool, those things haven't meant anything to me.

Some people watch them because they love them. For others, it's lack of choice. And that's tha bottom liiine, playa, if you know what's cookin'!
