A bad movie, for sure, but watchable at least. Its biggest problem is Hopper's character being ill-conceived. Yes, he needs a conflict, but there is no way someone who is that much of a screw-up is making officer in the U.S. Navy. That tends to undermine the credibility. Also, why is Liam Neeson in this, doing absolutely nothing?
I also see no point of tying it into the boardgame and that nonsense with the buoys. Just make a straight-up navy vs aliens shoot em up.

When watching it, I kept thinking "this is basically like Independence Day if they only had enough money for one spaceship".

It's close to unwatchable. It's very badly made garbage with very bad characterizations, videogame style villains and all attempts at drama and comedy fall completely flat. What makes it even worse is that it's ripping off Michael Bay and the way it shamelessly uses a real life crippled war veteran for cheap dramatic effect is cringe-inducing.
It's one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

I did like the part with the old timers getting the museum ship back to operational duty - never mind that it was factually incorrect.
I wish they had used the swearing instead of creatively censoring it. If you're not going to use it, don't even bother with it.
