The Ladykillers What did you rate it/think of it? And have you seen the original? I kind of went in, hoping for the "best", and since I love the original movie, I guess I should have waited a bit, with going in, with too high of expecations, as sadly for my part, the remake/update turned into a very unfunny and, well, lets just say, I did not like it, and threw it in the garbage bin, the very next day. I definitely prefer the original, but this one has enough merits of its own that I don't completely dislike at much as a lot of people do. For one thing, it's one of my favorite Tom Hanks performances. It's so rare that he really gets to stretch his acting legs beyond the usual nice guy roles he tends to get, and he looks like he's having the time of his life hamming it up as the ghoulish Professor. Likewise, Irma P. Hall, Tzi Ma, and J.K. Simmons all turn in pitch-perfect, delightfully cartoonish performances. I do think Ryan Hurst and Marlon Wayans are both kinda weak links in the cast, but it's more an issue of both of their characters just being annoying and one-note than being a problem of their acting. I also like the vintage gospel cues on the soundtrack, which give the movie a nice, semi-creepy atmosphere. I will admit, for a Coen brothers project, it does feel a touch unfocused and seems to be playing to the gallery- and I do find myself agreeing with the general consensus that it's one of their weaker offerings- but it's just one of those movies that's so willfully, deliberately off-putting and weird that I can't totally bring myself to throw it in the garbage bin, as it were. I do love a misfit.

Vera Cruz (1954) Easily one of the best Hollywood westerns of the 1950s... I love the offbeat setting of Mexico under Emperor Maximilian. The credits really should state, "CO-STARRING BURT LANCASTER'S TEETH".
