I want to see again a movie I only saw part of years ago.
It is English, in black and white and made probably late 1950s, early 1960s. Set mostly in the newsroom of a newspaper while London is under attack, either from a Soviet invasion or nuclear weapons attack. I think the protagonist (a journalist) spends some time on the streets looking either for his girlfriend or the story.
Any ideas on what this film is? I remember I was impressed by the acting and script so it is likely to have had name actors and/or director/scriptwriters.

sounds a lot like "the day the earth caught fire".
from wiki:
"A lone man walks through the sweltering streets of a deserted London. The film then goes back several months. Peter Stenning (Judd) was an up-and-coming journalist with the Daily Express, but a messy divorce has thrown his life into disarray. Stenning begins drinking too much (One of his lines is, "Alcoholics of the press, unite!"[6][7]). His Editor (Christiansen) has begun giving him lousy assignments. Stenning's only friend, Bill Maguire (McKern), is a veteran Fleet Street reporter who offers him encouragement and occasionally covers for him by writing his copy."
if i remember right, it's not an attack, but nuclear tests by the usa and ussr at the same time throw the world out of orbit and closer to the sun.

That was going to be my guess. Look for Michael Caine as a cop.

That's the one! I remember now it had the excellent Leo McKern (Rumpoleof the Bailey). Thanks. I will look for it so I can see it all.
