I do, I do, and I do. But as you say, not in our lifetimes. There's not enough money being put into it, and the powers that be don't see how they can MAKE money from it. So, not in our lifetimes.
Question though: Why would you believe we could colonize the moon but not Mars? The greater distance to Mars is the only drawback there. And not an unconquerable problem. Actually the surface of Mars is more welcoming than the moons, so colonizing Mars would be the better of the two.
The reason may be a boring one but its because of the distance. And that is a serious problem to be sure. But...
A) its the same problem with going to the moon, just on a larger scale. If supplies are sent in stages ahead of time, and the biological needs of the astronauts are addressed it is not insurmountable. and B) The rewards would be greater to go to Mars than to the moon. The moon only offers mineral resources, but Mars offers mineral resources AND others. Anything we can on the moon we can do on Mars. Mars has greater gravity creating a closer to home feel. And even though its toxic it does have an atmosphere. That alone offers the chance for microbial life, plant life, frozen water. Tons of things that make it more hospitable than the moon.
