I find it hard to rate...
While visually interesting, and the production was top notch... When I first watched it, I found I didn't care for the movie, and I thought it was too long. That doesn't mean it is a bad film, just that, I would rather watch numerous other movies instead. If it were made today, I would rate it a 6/10.
But, I can see why it is so popular with so many viewers, and why it was one of the best pictures of it's time. I even have the film in my DVD collection because it IS considered to be a classic... I'll bump it up a notch for those reasons.
7/10

B+ I gave it an 8 The production value alone is a tour de force. I've watched it once, late 90's, & I still recall much of its high points. Of course the story & characters do little for me... as it is, they're merely walking through the history it's portraying.

How can it possibly be rated anything other than 10/10?

I love the moment when Scarlet comes to senses and relializes that not human live but land, that only Tara, matters.

How can it possibly be rated anything other than 10/10? By being a non US-citizen and the civil war was just some period in some foreign country? I also couldn't care less about all the scene with Red (Rhett - I loooked it up) Butler (the love interest of Scarlet). And Clarke Gable with his fucking mustache...a sleazy guy I've always detested.

Country of origin or the setting of the film have nothing to do with the film's quality.

6/10 – a bloated costume drama, devoid of sympathetic characters, that sentimentalizes the Old South and plantation life.

Country of origin or the setting of the film have nothing to do with the film's quality. First: you might be biased because as an US-American it has an other relevance and or meaning than for me. Second: I gave you reasons why I don't give it a ten. The love interest scenes weakens it. And it is not the first movie that suffers from a love affair. In my humble opinion the movie is the strongest, and became the classic it is, when it is not about Rhett Butler but about the war/history, the big picture so to speak, or Scarlet and Tara, or Melanie (=> Olivia de Havilland is even better than Leigh imho) as the small picture within the great turmoil.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. (Just joking. Get it? Give a damn?)

love the 2 lead performances....but, well, its attitudes are too far removed from 21st century sensibilities.

7.5/10 - The 1st half of the movie was superior to the 2nd half, but still a really good movie and an incredible achievement.

love the 2 lead performances....but, well, its attitudes are too far removed from 21st century sensibilities. Expecting two characters who lived in the 19th century to have the same sensibilities as people or characters form the 21st century is plain moronic. And Gone With The Wind have 4 lead performances, Scarlet, Rhett, Ashley and Melanie.

I don't expect the CHARACTERS to have the same sensibilities, but a film which glorifies a time and place built upon slavery certainly is jarring to modern sensibilities.
