The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - 9.5/10
I don't care that it's now the "hip" thing to hate this movie (and the entire Dark Knight Trilogy for that matter), I love the hell out of this movie. I've never seen a summer blockbuster with so much raw emotion and power engulfing the screen for the entire runtime. The Dark Knight is certainly better, but The Dark Knight Rises has a ton going for it. Seeing Batman rise up from utter annihilation to go on and confront Bane while a massive brawl rages all around the two heavyweights is a kind of cinematic high I didn't feel again until Blade Runner 2049 (no coincidence Hans Zimmer composed the incredible scores for both movies).
I had forgotten how gorgeous this movie is as well. Batman Begins had its moments of beauty, as did The Dark Knight, but this one has the look and feel of a Fincher movie. Watching it again actually made me wish Wally Pfister would do some more cinematography gigs; he's brilliant here. Yes, the movie has its issues (mainly with the pacing near the middle), but the final hour more than makes up for that. This is some of Nolan's best work.

Ratatouille A+
I think I've watched it every summer since 2007.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) - 8.5/10
Actually better than I remember. The action, when done practically, is awesome. There are multiple action scenes that shame most released recently (I can't wait for M:I - Fallout). I still don't like the ending all that much, though. It's not bad, just conventional.

A Beautiful Mind over LoTR or Spirited Away? Yikes. And Spotlight still pisses me off, there is really nothing special about that movie at all. It really belonged to Fury Road or The Revenant.

Now You See Me (2013).
I'm not really sure what to think of it. I like the concept portrayed in the movie of magicians becoming a worldwide sensation and staying ahead of the the FBI, but the execution could've been a lot better. The biggest problem this movie has is that it thinks it's very smart, but in reality it's very predictable how unpredictable this movie is. There is also not really any tension throughout the entire movie, which would have helped in a heist/chase movie. The worst part is when you as a viewer are already aware what's going to happen and then for the characters in a movie acting like it's the biggest magic trick of all-time. As I said, I like the idea, but they should've thought of a better trick (and script, some of these lines are way too corny). I did like Eisenberg, Harrelson & Ruffalo in the movie and the movie is mildly entertaining if you have nothing to do. I'm afraid that over time I'll dislike it more and more, since the one thing that I will remember from it is how smart the movie thought it was. The visuals are ok, but they could've done so much more with the theme of magic visually. I'm thinking of a 5/10, but it wouldn't surprise me if that drops over time.

Barry Lyndon (1975) - 8.5/10
I watched this for the first time last night. At the moment, it's the most gorgeous movie I've ever seen. About an hour and a half in, I thought I was watching one of the 10-20 best movies I've ever seen as well. Unfortunately, from there the pace doesn't just slow down, it literally grinds to a halt and takes a nap.
It picks up again for the last 30-45 minutes, but it can be a chore to sit through. If not for the beautiful imagery, this movie would be nothing special. But it has breathtaking visuals and when it's at its best, it's something to behold.

I feel like this should be a thing here... sans polls, just post rating/review/etc of your most recent viewing(s). New year, new thread, new bananas... Bottle Rocket A-
I casually binge Wes Anderson's catalogue as a New Year's thing... Owen Wilson is f'n genius in this movie. I think more ppl who don't normally check Wes out should try this one, it's such a relaxing & hilarious gem.
Stand By Me A+
Not completely sticking to Wes, I put off another SBM viewing for a while now... I still think the deer scene is surely my fav cinematic moment ever. The Mountain Between Us 6.5/10 What a waste of two great actors.
