Watched the original last night for the first time in years.
Better than I remembered. Has some ropey points, but rather enjoyable none the less.
Anyone seen the remake?

I haven't seen the remake. I couldn't get through the original, it didn't appeal to me.

It's a little goofy by the third act but the acting and Schumacher's direction carry it.

I am a big fan of the original Flatliners. Didn't even want to venture anywhere near the box office and critical dud that remake was.
The original was at least original and in spite of some of it's ropey points, it's message about redemption, forgiveness and letting go is still impactful. It is skillfully presented and shot.

It's a little goofy by the third act but the acting and Schumacher's direction carry it. Oh, I disagree. I like the movie, and years back when it was HBO like every hour I watched it a ton. I liked it, but Schumacher's direction is it's downfall I think. It's so overly and awkwardly stylized and apparently their med school is also a medieval cathedral for some extremely un-subtle reason. It's a goofy movie, and the ropey moments are aplenty. The things they see when they are put under, and how they manifest later are pretty dumb and unimaginative, really. I think if anything, the cast is pretty good about keeping it grounded. Especially Kiefer Sutherland. The thing that carries it is the basic concept. It's a terrific idea for a movie that's essentially impossible to screw up. It could have been an amazing philosophical exploration, or a cheesy horror movie, and it fell somewhere in between, but heavily weighted to the latter. All that said, it was still an enjoyable film that I had a hard time turning off whenever it came on. I am kind of curious as to how that infallible premise is (apparently) ruined by the remake...

Favourite scene is Kevin Bacon on that train, when the 'spirit' of the little black girl walks towards him hurling all the racial slurs at him. Very powerful.
