Best Supporting Actress in, The Year of Living Dangerously (1982). I've never heard of it. Anyone seen it? Is it worth hunting down? For a role as a man

Not only that, but she played a man! The real question is ... why ? Were there no men available that year to play men ?
Yes, she did a terrific job ... but ... whyyyyyyyyy ? (just another rhetorical question.)

Not a bad movie if I recall. Could do with watching it again.
Another great performance by a woman playing a man is Felicity Huffman in Transamerica.

Yeah, it frequently makes my lists here of favorite films. Hunt was amazing and deserved that Oscar. The film is possibly director Peter Weir's finest.
Is it worth hunting down? I guess that depends on whether or not you have an interest in world history and politics, philosophy and other cultures.
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is among the most populated cities in the world. It also now contains one of the largest population of Muslims in the world. The film doesn't delve into how that came to be. But it is an indictment of Western government support for totalitarian governments of the Cold War 1960s, as long as they were not Communists. It's difficult for westerners to imagine the abject poverty depicted in the film. And when a people are suffering, they'll turn to any form of government to gain relief. As someone who is himself a societal reject (half-Chinese, half-Australian dwarf), Billy Kwan (Hunt) has great compassion and empathy for his people. His faith in the current dictator, President Sukarno, is eventually shattered by events. Guy Hamilton (young Mel Gibson) is an Australian reporter who has been sent there to cover a possible PKK (communist rebels) uprising in an attempt to overthrow Sukarno. Jill Bryant (young Sigourney Weaver) is a British embassy official who starts a relationship with Hamilton. Kwan is a successful photographer and a friend to just about everyone.
Two of my favorite characters are Kumar and Tiger Lily who at first appear to be just lowly helpers in Hamilton's office, but they are far more important than what they seem. There's also a recurring Vangelis theme which adds a melancholy mood to the story.
Now if my comments here have not left you totally bored, then you might like the movie.

As to my question concerning why Linda Hunt played Billy: Found this tidbit : Director Peter Weir cast Linda Hunt in the role of Billy Kwan, after failing to find an actor who could play the part in the way he wanted. It also said that she replaced another actor in the role.
Not to mention that the unconventional casting would get people's attention (?)
Linda Hunt is the first actress to have won an Academy Award for portraying a member of the opposite sex. Hunt is also the only actress ever to win an Academy Award for playing a man, with no cross dressing or gender confusion involved. Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry (1999)) received one for playing a biological female, who identifies as a man, Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love (1998)) received one for playing a woman, pretending to be a man, pretending to be a woman. I had a hard time getting into the Mel Gibson part of the movie, and found I might have preferred a movie all about Linda Hunt's character - but it wasn't a bad movie, just not to my taste. At the time I watched it, I had no idea it was a woman playing the role, and then I was doubly surprised watching SILVERADO and the fella-played-by-a-woman in YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY was now the Midnight Star- Stella, whom Patton falls hard and fast for.

Calling back to a previous thread, it's slower paced than I would prefer but yeah, it's worth a look at least.

Yes, and deservedly so. She did a great job as a man, even if her playing an Asian would be considered controversial today.
