definitely something from the non-English language countries as once you go outside of the non-English language movies you only got roughly France/Germany (maybe a bit more) that are solid enough and then it pretty much goes mostly out the window. Yeah, no. Japan and South Korea, just to name a couple, make excellent movies. Japan and South Korea are standouts in Asia, but you also have many European countries, for example Italy or Russia

There are many excellent movies (and TV shows) made in Canada every year - just not necessarily in the English language I cant say about the French Canadian except nothing has the reputation of Eyes Without a Face. I did watch Mon Oncle Antoine and Night Zoo which were boring and stupid. At least England made some decent memorable films in different genres. Canada went full commie in the 80s so they a) prevented private film business which could compete with Hollywood and b)made depictions of criminal acts forbidden for government funded film-something even Shakespeare wasn't restricted with. They made films about people with Alzheimer's and bus crashes. Bad movie planet said the typical Canadian film has a suicidal farmer having gay sex with a dead moose. Although I haven't seen that particular story depicted, I have seen variants that come close. In the 80s and 90s Canada had the reputation for the worst movies and tv.

Nicko's NoseI would have to disagree when looking at My Favorite Movies as my opinion remains the same as once you put aside English speaking countries there is not much left, mainly France, maybe Germany and then largely fizzles out, and then pretty much becomes forgettable after that.

Well maybe if you actually bothered watching movies from non-English speaking countries other than France and Germany you would have a different opinion.

Nicko's NoseI think the main reason why is those countries outside of the ones I mentioned tend not to have the screen presence etc that those do from the USA (and the like). with that said... I realize I have not seen a lot of movies from those regions (some, but not a lot) but given what I said above that kinda makes it noticeably more difficult for a movie to stand out for me from certain regions of the world. p.s. keep in mind what I said about the France/Germany thing is nothing concrete, but is a pretty good guideline for me.

Does he realize how many masterpieces are from non-english speaking countries?

Shocked no one has said North Korea yet… Oh, and going off the Turkish connection: I’m utterly in-the-dark as to Turkish cinema, but there was a ’53 Dracula adaptation from Turkey that apparently had all the charm of one of those ‘50s Mexican wrestler-vampire movies.

As Hollywood makes the bigger share of movies on the planet (actually a helluva lot of bad movies) then America must take 1st place.

Feologild OakesI don't watch Bollywood so I can't say if the movies made there are good or bad. I can only judge on what I see, But I take your point. Didn't know the output was bigger.
